Vol. 31, No. 14 / Nov. 29, 1999

This e-mail news digest is distributed each week to faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Links are included to more detailed stories at the Marketing and University Communication website.

Construction begins with excavation, service road

Construction crews are reporting today (Nov. 29) for work on the new $18.5 million academic building. Trailers and equipment will be moved into place near the fire lane turnaround, just south of the University Union. Site work begins with the creation of a new service road on top of what is now the sidewalk between the Phoenix Sports Center and the Cofrin Library. Perimeter fencing will go up soon. Demolition of the pedestrian bridge over the Garden Cafe/Christie Theatre sidewalk will take place later. Excavation work will be substantial, with truckload upon truckload of clay to be hauled away from the campus; sand and topsoil will be set aside for use around the foundation and in landscaping.

Confidential to PSC exercise addicts: Detours should be minor

The Phoenix Sports Center, Ecumenical Center and points east should remain more or less accessible to those walking from the central campus. During construction of the new service road (on top of what is now the "Sports Center path"), it is expected the existing fire lane between the Union and the EC will remain open to pedestrian traffic until the new sidewalk/fire lane reopens. Look out for truck traffic. (A site map is located at the Public Safety webpage at http://www.uwgb.edu/publicsafety/attention.htm
