UW-Green Bay among first in national benchmark survey of student engagement

UW-Green Bay was among the first 276 colleges and universities nationwide to take part in a new diagnostic tool aimed at revealing whether and how students are having meaningful learning experiences as reported by the students themselves. Last spring's National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) involved 63,000 randomly selected freshmen and seniors, including students from UW-Green Bay. Questions covered five areas: level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student interactions with faculty members, enriching educational experiences, and supportive campus environment. The results for UW-Green Bay students "confirm that we're right on the mark in looking to improve the learning experience," says Director of Institutional Research Deborah Furlong. She adds that results validate the attention being paid here to improvements in the freshman year. UW-Green Bay was among three Wisconsin universities participating. NSSE is sponsored by The Pew Forum on Undergraduate Learning and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The project aims to provide a new way to judge institutional quality, which now is often based on measures such as resources and reputation. For details about the survey and UW-Green Bay results, contact Furlong at FURLONGD or ext. 2374.

Former UW-Green Bay dean Rupp makes top-salary list

Wouldn't it be nice if educators were paid as much as athletes? If only as much as, say, a light-hitting rookie shortstop? Well, spotted on the Chronicle of Higher Education's list of highest paid presidents at private institutions is former UW-Green Bay administrator George Rupp. President of prestigious Columbia University in New York City, he comes in seventh at $500,204 per year. Heading the list is Judith Rodin of Penn at $655,557. Rupp earned about $35,000 per year as UW-Green Bay's dean of academic affairs in the late 1970s.

Penny Wars has nice payoff for United Way

The Resident Assistant Special Events & Residence Hall and Apartment Association (RHAA) co-sponsored a "Penny Wars" Fundraiser in the Residence Life area and raised a total of $680.20. The RAs on the Special Events Committee decide which non-profit area organization will benefit from the annual event, with, typically, a new recipient selected each year. This year, the Brown County United Way was chosen. The amount of money raised was over $200 more this year than last!
