NASA lands at UW-Green Bay!

UW-Green Bay has been chosen by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as lead institution for the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium. That announcement , made on campus by U.S. Rep. Mark Green last Friday, places the University in a select league with MIT, Brown and other prominent space-science institutions. Provost Howard Cohen and Prof. Steve Dutch, NAS, took the lead with local business leader George French in bringing the Consortium here, with UW-Green Bay selected over bids from UW-Milwaukee and UW-Madison. Scholarships, research grants and educational and outreach programs are in the future; the NASA agreement opens doors for UW-Green Bay to become "synonymous with space science in Wisconsin" and for students, faculty, K-12 districts and local business to pursue new space-related opportunities. College costs make headlines

In Tuesday's Green Bay Press-Gazette (and in other papers here and around the country) you'll find news regarding tuition increases and college affordability. The reason for the attention? The College Board has released two major studies. They show that tuition and fee increases this year have generally been in the 5 percent range and that a record $68 billion was available last year in student financial aid. For a wealth of data on the affordability and value of college, check the College Board release at http://www.collegeboard.org/press/cost00/html/001016.html

UW-Green Bay? Costwise, we're below average

One final item of interest regarding the national cost-of-college study released Monday — the Associated Press coverage notes that "average in-state tuition and fees at public, four-year schools is $3,510 per semester, or $148 more than last year." The corresponding numbers for fall 2000 at UW-Green Bay show that full-time, in-state tuition and fees here are several hundred dollars below the national average, at $3,306. The tuition/fee increase here of $156, or about 5 percent, is close to the average.
