LeCalsey heads Hall of Fame's Class of '00

Founding soccer coach and local business leader Lou LeCalsey heads the list of five individuals who will be recognized when the Phoenix Hall of Fame inducts its newest class Friday evening, Nov. 10. LeCalsey helped UW-Green Bay burst onto the national soccer scene when the high-scoring men's program made its debut in the late 1960s. He has since remained active as an ambassador for the sport, and as an advocate for Phoenix athletics as chairman of the Chancellor's Council of Trustees. Others to be honored are basketball standouts Richard Sims and Vicki (Anklam) Porter, soccer star Ivan Delbecchi, and two-sport star Philip Gallagher, a cross-country runner and Nordic ski standout. More on Gore

Leftovers from a hectic 24 hours spanning Friday and Saturday when a UW-Green Bay visit by Al Gore still seemed a very real possibility — The campaign advance team toured campus venues Friday and inquired about indoor sites including the Weidner Center, the University Theatre and Phoenix Sports Center. A potential conflict for the Weidner was Monday's load-in for a touring musical; questions about the UT involved the limited seating and striking the set from the campus theatrical production. The PSC was agreed upon as the backup to the Cofrin Library/Rose Hall outdoor site. Operations were well under way to turn the Union's Phoenix Room into a communications center (with umpteen dozen phone lines for the national press corps) when word came Saturday that the rally would be held downtown. It was the second time in an as many weeks that a national campaign had toured UW-Green Bay and chosen facilities elsewhere. The Cheney forces looked here but booked the Bay Beach Pavilion instead for the candidate's Oct. 20 appearance in Green Bay.

Candidate forum is still on

As of mid-morning, despite all the hype about the harmonic convergence of Democrat Al Gore and the NRA's Charleton Heston within blocks of each other this noon in downtown Green Bay, plans for political forums on campus remain unchanged. 30th Senate candidates Dave Hansen and Gary Drzewiecki are scheduled to face off in Alumni B at noon today (Oct. 30). On Wednesday, Nov. 1, 90th Assembly District candidate Brent Weycker speaks in the Point Sable Room.

Briefs

Bob O'Donnell, media services manager, recently conducted a day-long seminar on the "Essentials of Electronic Commerce" for UW-Madison's Small Business Development Center Program. The seminar discussed electronic commerce tools and technology, including on-line security, financial management, and successful web business strategies.

Encompass Child Care has honored a family with UW-Green Bay connections for their contributions to the organization. Prof. John Stoll, PEA, his wife Pam Stoll, president of the UW-Green Bay Alumni Association, and children were recognized with the Encompass Family Award for promotion of the agency.

Vicki Medland, adjunct in Natural and Applied Sciences and web coordinator for the Center for Biodiversity, is co-recipient of a $23,559 National Science Foundation research grant, "Reproductive tactics in an androdioecious crustacean." Working with a University of Akron colleague, Medland will investigate in the laboratory a clam shrimp that can reproduce via two methods. The species includes both hermaphrodites, which can self-fertilize, and males, but no true females. Medland says the study will add to knowledge about the evolution and advantages of sexual reproduction.

Prof. Bob Howe, Natural and Applied Sciences, is principal investigator for a project funded by a $138,760 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Great Lakes National Program Office. The project, "GIS Framework for Bird Conservation and Monitoring," will create predictive models of bird/habitat associations and result in comprehensive maps that illustrate areas of high conservation priority or vulnerability in the northern forest regions of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. The study will arrive at models by using more than 15 years of bird count results, climate data, and vegetation cover information from satellite imagery. Howe will work with colleagues from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the Great Lakes Regional Office of the Natural Conservancy, UW-Green Bay student field assistants and a web coordinator, also located at UW-Green Bay.
