Vol. 32, No. 1 / September 5, 2000

Welcome to this Opening Day edition of the LOG Online, the faculty/staff newsletter of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Links are included to more detailed stories at the Marketing and University Communication website and to an archive of past issues.

UW-Green Bay enrollment picture remains 'hot'

School starts Tuesday! UW-Green Bay projects an opening-day headcount of about 5,400 students. The near-record FTE (full-time equivalent) count of approximately 4,433 is more than 1 percent above the state-assigned FTE target of 4,357. Officials say strong demand fueled by new freshmen and transfer applicants, and increases in both the "yield rate" for newcomers and the retention rate for continuing students, have exceeded projections. They also forecast a tighter admissions picture for mid-year applicants (those seeking admission for spring semester).

Salute! Record number of vals and sals validates freshman quality

UW-Green Bay has always ranked high among state schools in terms of the academic preparedness of its new freshmen. That trend is continuing. The incoming class of 995 freshmen includes 23 valedictorians and 14 salutatorians; the total of 37 newcomers who graduated either first or second in their high school class is a new high. The average high school GPA of entering freshmen continues to climb, with the mean of 3.30 also a new high and an encouraging indicator. Freshmen typically see their college grades drop a half gradepoint from high school; the higher gradepoints and levels of achievement provide them a better first-year cushion.

UW-Green Bay scores well in US News rankings

We're not supposed to pay attention to these things, but we do, especially when the news is good. UW-Green Bay shows up in "Tier 2" among Midwest universities rated in the annual U.S. News College Rankings released last Friday. (The magazine incorporates "reputation score" and data on retention, graduation, class size, profile and other factors in assigning schools to each of four tiers, with Tier 1 being the highest.) Among the 30 Tier 2 schools, UW-Green Bay fares well in terms of both reputation and new-freshman quality. In fact, no public university in the category ranked higher in terms of new-freshman profile; 50 percent of Green Bay's freshmen ranked in the top quarters of their high school graduating classes.

Big Brother's eye-in-the-sky is watching you, building

Three new web cams are focused on construction of UW-Green Bay's new academic building. The cameras were mounted atop the Cofrin Library by Wisconsin Public Service in cooperation with the University's Information Services Division. WPS has a website touting the building's importance as a demonstration project for solar energy and building-integrated photovoltaics. Look for "Web Cameras" at http://www.buildingsolar.com/index.html
