UW System gets flexibility to choose 'lapse' instead of 'freeze'

Today's announcement of a hiring freeze for most state agencies does not directly apply to the University of Wisconsin System. Chancellor Bruce Shepard relays word from President Katharine Lyall that the governor has agreed to let the System meet the purpose of the freeze by lapsing a lump sum total of $2.7 million, Systemwide, for the current fiscal year. While the campus share of that lapse has yet to be determined, Shepard says, there will be no suspensions of new hiring or search and screen activities at UW-Green Bay. Shepard went on to say that the flexibility extended the UW System in managing this issue is positive recognition for the System, its Economic Stimulus Package and its potential role in any turnaround of the state's economy. Additional details are available online in a statement from Chancellor Shepard at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/features/freeze.html. An Associated Press news report on how the freeze will be applied at most other state agencies is online at http://www.jsonline.com/WI/110101/wi--hiringfreeze110101125151.asp

Aside from that, it was a good first day

New Chancellor Bruce Shepard made good on his pledge to get out and see the campus and meet faculty, staff and students. Among the videographers and photographers who turned out for the customary "first day on the job" shots was an intrepid agent for the LOG ONLine.
