News from Madison: smaller cuts for UW System?

Check your newspapers and online news sites on Wednesday, but there's been a new number tossed out with regard to potential cuts for the UW System as part of the state's budget repair bill. $20 million. That's what the Senate Democratic Caucus endorsed as the System's share of statewide budget reductions. That amount would be well below the $108 million advocated by the state Assembly, and below the $51 million in proposed UW cuts outlined by Gov. McCallum. Although much remains to be settled, Regent President Jay Smith said the caucus's position "is a strong statement of priorities that recognizes the contribution the UW System makes to economic development." Stay tuned for more news.
