UW System considers 'bare-bones' budget todayWatch for news out of Madison with today's Board of Regents meeting on the proposed 2003-05 UW System budget. "In deference to Wisconsin's difficult financial situation," a UW System news release says, the Regents are considering a budget that seeks no new funding to cover inflation or new programs. Limiting increases only to commitments already made by the university, the budget is a departure from past biennial requests and is in keeping with state Department of Administration guidelines. More detail is at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2002/r020819.htm.
Spielberg? Coppola? No, Zooma Zooma... and Mary Ann Cofrin Hall is starMary Ann Cofrin Hall may look like the setting for a blockbuster movie Saturday morning (Aug. 24) when the New York-based production company Zooma Zooma pulls up in front with a truckload of equipment, a support motor home, and a crew of about 30. They'll be filming part of a promotional spot for renewable energy that will air on Wisconsin television stations during October. The client is Wisconsin Focus on Energy. Prof. John Katers, Natural and Applied Sciences, and about 30 student "extras" will get their seconds of fame in a classroom scene. The Vista conference room and several other settings in the building will be backgrounds for other scenes not specifically related to the University. Creative and technical staff from Zooma Zooma who toured the building last Saturday to plan shots and establish light levels heaped praise on the building as a visual setting.

FYI to new faculty: special consideration for international, NSE studentsThe Office of International Education wants to remind new faculty members, in particular, that UW-Green Bay has always tried to be a welcoming place for incoming international students and National Student Exchange participants. September 11 art is coming in; more is welcomeArtworks are beginning to come in for the University's September 11 Commemoration art exhibition, and children are leading the way! Among the creations contributed thus far are drawings by the 7-year-old son of two staff members, and the children of one of our on-line nursing students currently living in Staten Island, New York. A quilt, a poem, and a peace sign are among other contributions. So what about your office or organization? Or maybe just you? This is an advanced-talent-not-required exhibition. The theme is "Walking Into Tomorrow Together" and the focus is unity. All works of art will be displayed on Sept. 10 and 11 in the Phoenix Room of the University Union. The deadline for submitting projects to the Office of Student Life is 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9. If you can't bring it over, they'll pick it up. If you need supplies, they'll provide them. Could it be any easier? Questions? Call Student Life at 465-2200 ext. 40.

CEO of Greater Green Bay foundation is helping lead the chargeBackers of the WPT studio in Green Bay, in addition to forming a local advisory committee to guide the future of the facility, have agreed to raise $150,000 a year for the next two years to keep the facility operating. "I think that you can fairly say that we are under the gun trying to secure resources for this effort," says Ken Strmiska, President & CEO of the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation and a member of the advisory committee. "Fundraising is never easy but because of the deadlines that WPT has put us under to raise $75,000 by August 15th and an additional $75,000 by October 1st it certainly has provided us with motivation." Those interested in supporting their efforts can contact "Preserving the Voice of Northeast Wisconsin" c/o Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, 302 N. Adams St. Suite 100, Green Bay, WI 54301.
