Spill forces evacuation; Health Services to reopen Thursday
The Student Services Building was evacuated for a short time Wednesday (Jan. 23) as a precaution in response to a chemical spill in the Counseling and Health Center. A Health Services nurse was treating a patient when a small quantity of liquid phenol was spilled on the floor. The chemical emits a strong odor and can have some health effects. Health Services was evacuated and ventilated at about 11:30 a.m. As a precautionary measure, the evacuation area was extended to the entire Student Services Building. The building remained closed for about 45 minutes. Health Services is expected to remain closed until noon Thursday when hazardous materials experts from Milwaukee finish cleaning up the area. The University Public Safety office coordinated the response. The Green Bay Fire Department also was called in to assess the situation. No injuries or illnesses were reported.
