Scheberle, Stokes head list of UW-Green Bay faculty promotions

The UW System Board of Regents approved promotions for nine UW-Green Bay faculty members at the monthly meeting last week in Milwaukee. Congratulations, Millie!

No longer breaking news, but still worthy of a congratulations here: the fact that "Thoroughly Modern Millie" stole the show at the Tony Awards in New York City, including a win for best musical. That's a major coup for the show's local investors including the Weidner Center, a lead player in a nationwide presenters' consortium that hopes Broadway success will mean critical and financial success for the future. The road tour is expected to open at the Weidner in 2003. Press-Gazette columnist Warren Gerds describes the innovative arrangement at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/et_4410995.shtml. The Weidner Center Website offers a summary of Millie's honors at http://www.uwgb.edu/weidner/ActTwo_image_archive.htm.

Board waits to set tuition

The Board of Regents voted Thursday to adopt the 2002-03 UW System operating budget, but it chose not to set tuition for the coming academic year because of the continuing impasse on the state budget repair bill. "The ultimate impact of these reductions on our enrollments and services cannot be known until we know what tuition increase will be included in the final bill — whether tuition will be capped at the Governor's proposed 10 percent, or 8 percent, or somewhere in between," said UW System President Katharine Lyall. A special tuition-setting meeting is expected by early July, regardless of Legislative progress on the budget.

Chief budget officer leaves UW System

Associate Vice President for Budget and Planning Kathleen R. Sell attended her last Regents meeting this month. She is leaving UW System administration after 19 years to become a faculty member at UW-Madison. System President Katharine Lyall noted that Sell had helped shepherd 10 biennial budget requests. The Regents' resolution of appreciation is archived at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2002/r020607b.htm

FYI: State funding falls to 31 percent

One more interesting tidbit from last week's Regents meeting and budget discussion: With the 2002-03 fiscal year, state funding as a percentage of the university budget will fall to its lowest level ever since the UW System merger in 1971, officials noted. State funds will comprise 31.3 percent of the UW budget in 2002-03. At merger, the state provided 50 percent of university funding.

Attention Web developers! There's help in meeting accessibility standards

Did you know that there's new software called "LIFT" (an add-on to Web-creation software) that will prompt page designers to keep things in compliance with common accessibility standards? There is. And you'll learn about that and more in workshops presented this month by CIT. As the Aug. 1 deadline nears for showing significant progress on meeting Web-accessibility standards, CIT is inviting people across campus who do Web-development work to attend a workshop session. The brief sessions are hands-on affairs in which participants will actually update their own pages. Call the Help Desk for more info.
