State of Wisconsin announces 'Heightened Awareness' alert

Gov. Scott McCallum has announced that, in response to a directive by U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, public facilities in Wisconsin join others across the nation in a state of "heightened awareness" this week upon the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. While the governor "encourages remembrance ceremonies to continue as planned," reads an alert from Madison, "the key is heightened awareness." The national security level was moved Tuesday to "orange," meaning that while there is not necessarily a specific, credible threat, it is believed there is a general, high risk of a terror attack.

Employees are reminded to be observant, and to call 2300 with questions

UW-Green Bay has been asked to remind all employees that "heightened awareness" status still boils down to the fact that, if something appears suspicious, they should not hesitate to report it to their supervisors or Public Safety at ext. 2300. Examples cited in a state security checklist include:

• Suspicious personnel, particularly those carrying suitcases or other containers, or those observing, photographing, or asking questions about operations or security practices.

• Unidentified vehicles parked or operated in a suspicious manner...

• Abandoned parcels or suitcases

• Any other activity considered suspicious

Reminder: Today's 9/11 commemorative events

Displays and art exhibits mark a day of quiet reflection and "back to normal" activities as the campus observes the Sept. 11 anniversary. It is the second day for an art exhibition and a commemorative video on display in the Union's Phoenix Rooms until 3 p.m. Drawings by artist Jeanne Houle Peters are on exhibit in the Studio Arts 407 Gallery. A moment of silence will be observed before tonight's men's soccer game at Phoenix Field, where 2,824 ribbons will adorn the fence. The planning committee scheduled most major events and programs for yesterday (Tuesday); about 100 people gathered for a candlelight walk and program last night at the Ecumenical Center that included remarks by Chancellor Bruce Shepard.
