UW-Green Bay students log 300 hours of community service... as orientation! Here's a good news story: On Wednesday, Aug. 29, about 140 brand-new UW-Green Bay students volunteered for community service at six local sites: St. Mary's Early Childhood Education Center, the Einstein Project, the N.E.W. Zoo, Green Bay Children's Museum, the Ecumenical Center, and the Brown County Mental Health Center. Many of the students, "Intro to College" freshmen, indicated they appreciate the opportunity to learn while making a difference in the community. This annual program is organized by the Office of Student Life as a way of orienting new students to the concept of service and making connections between the campus and the community. * * * * *

Nosmo King, this means youOff-campus readers of the LOG ONLine might not have yet seen this recent posting: A new campus policy extends the "smoking ban" to all state-owned vehicles and to outdoor areas within 30 feet of several high-traffic building entrances. The entrances are the north entrance to Student Services; both the east and west entrances at the Cofrin Library plaza level (the west side is the Circle Entrance side); the north or main entrance to Mary Ann Cofrin Hall; and the concourse level entrance to the library near the Garden Cafe. (Nosmo King? Comic Jackie Vernon used to claim that was his original stage name inspired by a sign in his boarding house and the promise of vast visibility but it never caught fire.) * * * * *

Werner's booking courtesy of special student/music partnershipNext week's campus appearance by jazz standout Kenny Werner is worth mentioning for another reason: the partnership involving the Music Program, the student Jazz Society and the fee-funded Good Times Programming Board that made it possible. That's why the concert is free to the first 150 UW-Green Bay students who request tickets at the Student Union Main Desk (one ticket per valid ID). * * * * *
State law reminder: Report sexual assaultsAll employees are required by law to report knowledge of sexual assaults on campus. The Wisconsin law states "...any person employed at an institution or center who witnesses a sexual assault on campus or receives a report from a student enrolled in the institution or center that the student has been sexually assaulted shall report to the dean of students of the institution..." This does not mean that you have to violate any confidences or provide names. It does mean that incidents are to be reported to the Dean of Students, ext. 2152. * * * * *
