Vol. 34, No. 7 / September 16, 2002The LOG Online e-mail news digest is distributed each week to faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Links are included to more detailed stories at the Marketing and University Communication Web site and to an archive of past issues.
Chancellors' 'Wrecking Crew' dominates Phoenix Phacts ChallengeThe "Wrecking Crew" team co-captained by Chancellors Bruce Shepard and Edward Weidner emerged triumphant if not victorious (actually, we're not sure who won) in Monday noon's highly competitive Phoenix Phacts Challenge before a full house in the Nicolet Room. Creative judging and inside information ("Me," was one winning answer for Dr. Weidner, when luck of the draw asked his team to identify UWGB's first chancellor) marked the laughter-filled proceedings. The "College Bowl" style competition saw the Chancellors' team beat a regalia-clad Jerry "The Mace" Rodesch and the Medallions team in the semifinals before facing Tom Maki's TERMinators (who devoured the Flaming Fighting Tomatoes) in the finals. The Chancellors relied on student team member Jen Keene to ace the final quiz question (The theme of last week's 9/11 observances? "Walking Into Tomorrow Together") as the first event of Inaugural Week concluded to a well-deserved ovation. * * * * *

Tickets were not, are not and will not be distributed, despite what you might have heard elsewhere. * * * * *

What's the UW System worth? Try $9.5 billion, per yearThe UW System contributes $9.5 billion to the state's economy each year, which is nearly a 10-fold return on Wisconsin's investment in the university, according to a new study. Some 150,000 jobs and more than $400 million in tax revenue also tie back to the System. The Economic Impact of the University of Wisconsin System Study, presented last week to the Board of Regents, may be found at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2002/r020912a.htm. * * * * *
UWGB students support local economy via shopping tripOn Saturday, Sept. 7, two busloads of UW-Green Bay students descended on downtown Green Bay to do some shopping as part of "Destination Downtown," a program offered by the Office of Student Life. The goal of this Welcome Week event was to introduce students to the downtown area. Merchants provided give-aways and discounts to their new customers. Comedy City offered a special afternoon show, free to the students. The students learned their way around downtown and got some great deals.
