UW-Green Bay formally unveils 'Connecting learning to life' theme

Emphasizing its connections to the community and distinctive approach to learning, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay yesterday (April 16) launched a new approach to capturing its mission. The theme "Connecting Learning to Life" will be central to communication efforts and a coordinated approach to telling the University's story. A news release explains more at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2003april.htm#connecting.

Chancellor: Student projects show connections

During brief remarks at Wednesday's well-attended student research symposium, Chancellor Bruce Shepard congratulated the more than 100 student exhibitors whose work was featured. He pointed to their projects as emblematic of the best of UW-Green Bay's interdisciplinary, problem-focused mission. Beneath a banner reading "University of Wisconsin-Green Bay: Connecting learning to life," he said the symposium was a perfect setting for talking about "connections."

Snapshots from the student excellence symposium

In only two years it has become — to judge from the favorable reaction — one of UW-Green Bay's most important annual events. Student artists, researchers and activists showed off their best work at Wednesday's Academic Excellence Symposium in the Union's Phoenix Room. Snapshots from the event are online at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.

New Web look is 'Connecting'

The switch was thrown Wednesday to activate UW-Green Bay's new primary World-Wide Web banners. They incorporate the "Connecting Learning to Life" theme as recommended by the Marketing Council with input from others on campus and off. Campus webmaster Paula Ganyard is communicating with web designers (mostly administrative offices) as to the phase-in, later this year, of the banners on other pages as needed. The main homepage is, of course, at http://www.uwgb.edu/ and an example of a secondary-page treatment is at the Prospective Students page at http://www.uwgb.edu/prospective/index.htm.

We'd argue it's more than a 'slogan,' but...

Both local newspapers yesterday carried items on the "Connecting learning to life" theme. The Green Bay News-Chronicle's coverage, "UWGB connects with new slogan," is archived at http://www.greenbaynewschronicle.com/page.html?article=119425.

Reminder: Campus budget information was topic today

All UW-Green Bay faculty and staff were invited to a session at 12:30 p.m. today (Thursday, April 17) in the Christie Theatre on the lower level of the University Union. Chancellor Bruce Shepard spoke to about 150 faculty and staff members to offer an overview and accept questions on the draft 2003-05 UW-Green Bay budget. It is expected that information and a link to a budget Website also will be shared via an all-campus email.

Regent President says System will comply with Joint Finance directive

Here's an update on last week's news involving more than $300,000 in new and additional cuts ordered by the Joint Finance Committee. (The cuts are to be applied to UW System central administration in the FY03 period now drawing to a close.) Although UW officials last week expressed frustration at the move, Regent President Guy Gottschalk told the Associated Press this week that he will no longer ask Joint Finance to reconsider their action. The full story is online at http://www.janesvillegazette.com/stbudget_uw041603.asp.

Financial aid shift draws budget attention

With talk of a $250 million UW System budget cut ($100 million even with a tuition offset), another provision in the Governor's budget proposal has drawn relatively little media attention. Until now. A plan to increase financial aid by $23 million next year, but to fund it by reallocating auxiliary reserves, has many asking questions. The Green Bay Press-Gazette made this their lead, front-page story Wednesday at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/local_9808180.shtml.
