Smile! Tuesday is 'Phuture Phoenix Day'UW-Green Bay's student body may have a much younger look Tuesday when 550 local fifth-grade students visit the campus for the first Phuture Phoenix Day. The event is aimed at encouraging the youngsters to succeed in school and pursue a college education. Research shows that long-term attitudes about higher education are shaped as early as fifth grade. Students from 10 Green Bay elementary schools will participate, arriving at 9:30 a.m. at the Weidner Center and visiting classrooms, residence halls, the library and other parts of campus. The day is topped by a 1:30 p.m. ice cream social in the Phoenix Room. All are invited.
Watch for media coverage, and increased trafficTV coverage of Phuture Phoenix Day at UW-Green Bay is expected to start early Tuesday morning with a live appearance by event organizer Cyndie Shepard scheduled for the WBAY-TV 2 morning show. Camera crews are expected later in the day, and there will be plenty to capture. Twenty-two faculty members, for example, are opening the doors of their classrooms to the Phuture Phoenix. The faculty members are: John Stoll, Donna Ritch, Tom Nesslein, Illene Noppe, Sarah Meredith, Derek Jeffreys, Candy Conard, Jerold Rodesch, David Coury, Michael Kraft, Will Winter, Dean Von Dras, Tim Kaufman, Helen Schaal, Patricia Ragan, Heidi Fencl, Peter Breznay, Janice Cusano, Bill Niedzwiedz, Judy Martin, Bob Howe and Bill Laatsch. Dean Rodeheaver will lead tours of Mary Ann Cofrin Hall.
Planners include Cyndie Shepard, many from across campusCyndie Shepard, wife of Chancellor Bruce Shepard, organized the Phuture Phoenix Program. She has received assistance from many UW-Green Bay students, who are serving as mentors of the fifth-graders, as well as faculty and community members. Faculty and staff members who assisted in planning the event are: Kristin Vespia, Tim Kaufman, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Linda Tabers-Kwak, Helen Schaal, Bill Niedzwiedz, Suzy Pfeifer, Scott Furlong, Debbie Furlong, Mike Stearney, Juliet Cole, Kevin Collins, Laura Riddle, Ann Rodrian and the staff of the Phoenix Sports Center. Community members also pitched in to get the program off to a successful start. They are Ginny Riopelle, Janet Lieb, Beth Schmidt and Kirstin Reitan. "With this kind of support we can't do anything BUT have a successful Phuture Phoenix Program," Cyndie Shepard says. "Thanks to all who have given their time to help."

Privatization of the UW? Some are talkingEven proponents admit it's still a long-shot, and a long way off. But recent moves to gain additional flexibility for the UW System, and a proposed budget that will reduce even further the state's share of funding, have set some people talking. The story "UW Inc.?" appeared in the April 12 edition of Madison's Capital Times newspaper at http://www.madison.com/captimes/news/stories/46809.php.
More turnover on the Board of RegentsThis time it doesn't involve an appointment by the governor, but yet another seat on the UW System Board of Regents is changing hands nonetheless. Jonathan Barry, the longest-serving Regent at 12 years, was on the board as VTAE representative, but as his involvement with that board ends, so does his Regent service. The Wisconsin State Journal summed up his career at http://www.madison.com/archives/read.php?ref=wsj:2003:04:12:263972:LOCAL/WISCONSIN.
