More on choice of Erickson as professional/grad studies' top bananaEarlier this week, Provost Sue Hammersmith announced the choice of Fritz J. Erickson, an administrator and faculty member at Eastern Washington University, as UW-Green Bay dean of professional and graduate studies. A news release with full details is now archived on the Web site at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2003april.htm#dean.
Kids go ape over UW-Green Bay, Phuture Phoenix dayPhuture Phoenix day was a huge success. The 550 young students made great friends with their 100 or more college-age guides. If words don't do it justice, sensational images come close. Check out the photo gallery at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.
Institution's primate is swamped by autograph seekersIf you want to get a smile out of Chancellor Bruce Shepard this week, ask him for his autograph. He was besieged by signature seekers (maybe 50, all told) at Tuesday's Phuture Phoenix day. The run probably started with Phoenix basketball players signing for the fifth-graders; the celebrity status carried over to the man who was described to the kids as the University's "big principal." (Incidentally, the third definition of "primate" is "one who is first in authority or rank: leader.") If you haven't yet clicked the photo gallery, there's a shot at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photopg3.htm.
Newspaper: Don't monkey around with student financial aid"Avoid having students fund aid increases" is the headline over the editorial in the April 23 edition of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The newspaper takes issue with plans to tap auxiliary funds for one-time support of a $23 million financial aid increase. Click http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/opinion_9827413.shtml.
Maybe softball needs a rally monkey for weatherO-for-3. That was the batting average for the Phoenix women's softball program in trying to play their home opener in the face of ice, rain and, most recently, wet grounds. Tuesday's sunshine wasn't enough to save the doubleheader vs. Wisconsin; those games will not be rescheduled. This just in, however; the field will be playable for the doubleheader today (Thursday, April 24), vs. Loyola starting at 1 p.m.
Have you heard this one making the rounds? Why did the panicked monkey bolt from the tavern? He heard the person next to him ask for a bag of candy. Rhesus pieces.
On a serious note, Earth Week activities continueSorry for that previous item. (Nothing to joke about. Primates are being hunted for food, some to extinction, worldwide, with habitat destruction a problem as well.) Efforts to focus attention on environmental protection continue with Earth Week activities today (Thursday, April 24) and Saturday (April 26). Two members of the Public and Environmental Affairs faculty will speak in the 1965 Room of the Union today at noon (Prof. Laurel Phoenix on "Water Issues in America" and 1 p.m. (Prof. Troy Abel on "Glocal [Global/Local] Environmentalism.") From 2 to 5 p.m. this Saturday, campus cleanup volunteers fan out from the Ecumenical Center. Garbage bags will be provided.
Also serious: Habitat for Humanity's Shantytown is FridayThe UW-Green Bay student chapter of Habitat for Humanity will sponsor its annual Shantytown from 7 p.m. Friday (April 25) to 8 a.m. Saturday (April 26) in the parking lot of First United Methodist Church at the corner of Howe and Monroe Streets downtown. The 60 or so participants sleeping overnight in cardboard boxes are inviting donations of good clothing and blankets for the homeless. For details, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2003april.htm#homeless.
No monkey business here: Master's of Management info sessions next weekThis too, is an important announcement if you know of anyone interested in learning more about the Master's of Management program. The sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, 6 to 7 p.m., and Thursday, May 1, 6 to 7 p.m. Both information sessions will be held in the 1965 Room of the University Union. 'Where's the monkey?'If you've been out of touch, perhaps wandering in the rain forest and wondering what it's all about, Green Bay Press-Gazette cartoonist Joe Heller offers his take on the 'Where's the monkey?' mystery at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/heller/. Or, there's a straight news story at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/local_9937449.shtml.
