Additional security measures Parking changes, checks Information on 'being observant' More communication |
Vol. 34, No. 40 / February 13, 2003The LOG Online e-mail news digest is distributed each week to faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Links are included to more detailed stories at the Marketing and University Communication Web site and to an archive of past issues.
UW-Green Bay will step up security measures in response to new warningsVisitors and members of the university community can expect to see additional security measures around campus in the wake of new advisories issued this week by FBI counter-terrorism units and the state of Wisconsin's Emergency Management Office. These latest warnings intensify the state of awareness declared last Friday when the nationwide terror-assessment level was upgraded to "orange," which means that while there is not necessarily a specific, credible threat, there is a high generalized risk of terrorist attacks. Chancellor Bruce Shepard, who met earlier today with Public Safety and university leadership, said UW-Green Bay would comply with state and federal directives and take "reasonable steps to address the situation while at the same time not damaging what the campus is about." * * * * *
Parking changes, spot checks are possibleUW-Green Bay is likely to place tighter restrictions on vehicle parking particularly in areas immediately adjacent to major buildings as the result of the latest state and federal security recommendations announced this week. In addition, packages or bags carried into Phoenix Sports Center, Weidner Center and other campus events could be subject to spot checks. "We are well aware that extra security can sometimes be considered an inconvenience," says Randy Christopherson, director of Public Safety, "but our responsibilities to the campus and community are clear. Also, there is a value in alerting people of the need to be more aware of their surroundings." Campus officials are currently taking a renewed, comprehensive look at issues related to building access, security and emergency-response procedures. * * * * *
Additional information on 'being observant'Last week's security advisory to UW-Green Bay faculty and staff reminded employees that under a "heightened alert" they should report anything that appears suspicious to their supervisors or Public Safety at ext. 2300. Additionally, Public Safety is today reminding permanent employees that faculty and staff have the authority to request ID of anyone seeking access to campus facilities. (At the same time, employees are counseled to consider their own comfort level and personal safety, and to call 2300 immediately with questions or requests for assistance.) * * * * *
Look for additional communicationThe Public Safety Office is expected to release additional details in the coming days, as they become available, as to possible changes in campus parking and public security procedures. It is UW-Green Bay's intent to keep students, faculty and staff well informed regarding these measures. Periodic e-mails are planned; the Public Safety Website will be an additional source of information, recommendations and updates. Current emergency-action procedures are archived at http://www.uwgb.edu/publicsafety/emergency/index.htm. * * * * *
