UW-Green Bay mourns passing of Gary Weidner

Campus and community are mourning the passing of Gary Weidner, who died Saturday at the age of 54. Chancellor Bruce Shepard, in sharing the grief of so many, said, "I have lost a good personal friend; UWGB has lost a lifelong supporter; Green Bay has lost a citizen dedicated to community service; and his family has lost the finest father and the finest son I have had the pleasure of knowing." Gary Weidner's ties to the institution date to its inception; he was the oldest son of founding Chancellor Edward Weidner and became one of UW-Green Bay's leading supporters in his own right. Gary and his wife, Ellen (Schell) Weidner, a UWGB graduate, and their teen-age sons, Peter and Jim were familiar figures at athletics and performing arts programs and special events across campus. A graduate of the UW-Madison law school, a prominent Green Bay attorney and partner in the firm Hanaway Weidner Bachhuber Woodward & Maloney, Gary was also active in civic affairs. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Meyer Theater and a former president of the Brown County Harbor Commission.
