UW-Green Bay hosts teacher workshop on watershed monitoring

UW-Green Bay is hosting a workshop this week (July 21-24) to provide high school teachers with hands-on training in water quality monitoring in and around the Lower Fox River watershed. Teachers from Green Bay Southwest, Markesan, Appleton East and Luxemburg-Casco high schools will learn how to integrate watershed monitoring into classroom curriculum. It's the first component of a multi-year program funded by a $1.5 million grant from Arjo Wiggins, Appleton. Prof. Kevin Fermanich is program director. For more, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2003july.htm#watershed.

From the golf course: more food for thought

You don't need a tee time for lunch, but calling ahead might help. Whey? The summer menu at the Shorewood Golf Course has expanded to include chicken and vegetarian sandwich option. Most folks and offices on campus should have already received full menus and a trial coupon for 20% off; if not, you can call manager Rick Warpinski. He notes that they're delighted to respond to call-ahead orders, if someone has a tight schedule, by having the order prepared ahead of time for take-out or eat-in. The number to call is ext. 2118, or check the menu online at http://www.uwgb.edu/shorewood/menu.asp.

Top honor for student athlete: Loiselle is Horizon's best

The award itself was announced in early July, but not too late to mention here: senior Kristy Loiselle of UW-Green Bay has been honored with the Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor presented by the Horizon League. Loiselle, already the women's basketball player of the year, was recognized as student-athlete-of-the-year for athletic and academic excellence. See http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/wbb/070203.html.

Good news for summer: Camps on upswing

The Summer Camps program is busy these days, for good reason. Numbers are up in terms of youth registration across a variety of camps. Worth a mention:

• Middle School Band, Orchestra and Choral Camp - up 20%
• Summer Discovery - up 40%
• The new Spanish Immersion Camp - enrolled 31 children

Program director Mona Christensen of Outreach and Extension notes that the popular Summer Discovery program caps off the summer with week-long sessions Aug 4-8 and Aug. 10-15. Each week concludes with final presentations (rocket launchings, plays, skits, art presentations etc.) on Friday of both weeks, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Ecumenical Center.

UW-Parkside to host 75 countries at global computer test

Our colleagues in Kenosha are getting pumped up about the fact that the best young computer programmers from 75 countries (Albania through Vietnam) will visit UW-Parkside the week of Aug. 16 for the International Olympiad in Informatics. The 15th IOI is the first to be held in North America. Members of the American team captured gold and silver during last year's IOI in South Korea.
