Green Bay's University is going to the bears

Prof. Robert Howe, adjunct faculty member Dr. Chris Katz and students from UW-Green Bay, along with the U.S. Forest Service, are launching a new five-year study of bears in Oconto and Forest counties. The study is believed to be the first in Wisconsin to use GIS technology to accomplish two primary goals — documenting the movements of bears in relation to people and landscape, and comparing the health of bears in an area of high human density to that of bears in an area where few people live. For full details, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2003june.htm#bears.

Does a bear sit (still) in the woods?

An aspect of the new black bear research based at UW-Green Bay will be to track up to 10 collared animals near Lakewood and Townsend, a moderately developed cottage and resort area, to see if they are attracted by human activity, sit still or are driven deeper into the forest. Readings also will document how often bears are close to humans, compared to the number of times people actually see them. (In-the-wild sightings are relatively infrequent). The first round of trapping and tagging is just getting underway.

Chancellor credits Legislators for pulling together for UW-Green Bay

The letters-to-the-editor columns of local newspapers recently published a note of appreciation from Bruce Shepard. The letter thanks members of this area's legislative delegation for their support of funding to upgrade the Phoenix Sports Center in the 2005-07 biennium. John Gard, Dean Kaufert, Dave Hansen, Robert Cowles, Judy Krawczyk, Phil Montgomery, Frank Lasee, Becky Weber, Karl Van Roy and Alan Lasee are mentioned by name. It's archived as the first "News and Notes" entry on the Chancellor's site at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/index.htm.

Bayfest recap: sunny and mild

Billed as the largest food and music festival north of Summerfest, UW-Green Bay's annual Bayfest celebration had near-perfect weather for its 23rd annual run concluded Sunday (June 15). The Green Bay Press-Gazette has a recap in today's paper at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/local_10807303.shtml.

Snapshots from an early-summer tradition

University photographer Eric Miller took an afternoon stroll early in the festival and captured a few images from Bayfest. Mixed among the midway, tiger and t-shirt shots are photos of Alumni corn stars Sue Geiser, Shane Kohl and Mike Kline. They're at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.

Green Bay Film Society schedules a summer showing

For the first time, Green Bay Film Society is scheduling a summer event. A special screening of Caroline Link's Oscar winning film, "Nowhere in Africa," is scheduled for 6 p.m. this Wednesday (June 18) in the Historic West Theater, 405 West Walnut St. at Broadway. Prof. David Coury, Humanistic Studies, will introduce the film and lead discussion afterward. Based on a best selling autobiographical novel by Stefanie Zweig, the film tells the story of a German Jewish family that flees the Nazis in 1938 to settle on a remote farm in Kenya. The film won the 2002 Academy Award for best foreign film. Regular theater admission will be charged.

Know where this pottery is? Its owner would like it back

Prof. Jeff Nekola, Natural and Applied Sciences, is seeking about three dozen pieces of pottery, valued at $700, that recently disappeared from the Laboratory Sciences greenhouse. Nekola stashed two boxes of pottery in the greenhouse after the Mother's Day weekend heirloom plant sale, and when he returned, found one empty box. Nekola had made the pieces over the course of the last year, and was selling them at various ceramics program venues to benefit the ceramics program. If you know the pottery's whereabouts, you can send a message via e-mail (nekolaj@uwgb.edu) or telephone (extension 2937). Or, the pottery can be dropped off at Nekola's office at 112 Wood Hall, the Natural and Applied Sciences office, Environmental Sciences 317, or the Public Safety office in Instructional Services 1024. Nekola says he'll ask no questions.

UW System graduates more than 29,000 students

As the spring commencement season closed, and elected officials sought to finalize the state budget, the UW System took time to note that more than 29,000 students have graduated from state campuses during the 2002-03 academic year. That, says President Katharine Lyall, makes quite a case for the economic impact of UW System institutions. For more, see the System site at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2003/r030609.htm.

Formerly at Union, look for Warpinski at the golf course

Campus golfers already know about this change. For the rest of us, worth announcing here is the arrival of Rick Warpinski (UW-Green Bay Class of '91) as new manager of the Shorewood Golf Course. Warpinski previously served assistant director University Union.

What about the bogey burger? The double bogey burger?

Worth promoting is this summer's new menu at Shorewood, which offers a nice choice of sandwiches. Golfers leaving the course can get The Birdie (turkey and mayo) or The Water Hazard (tuna and mayo, of course) at $2.75 or the John Daly-size Par 5 at $4.75. Serving from 10:30 a.m. daily. Check it out at http://www.uwgb.edu/shorewood/menu.asp.

John Baumgart going-away event is June 30

Here's how well-known this guy is: When Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton gave the Commencement address last month she mentioned just a handful of names from her days as an early (1970s) student at UW-Green Bay. One of them was John Baumgart; she fondly remembered some parking-ticket issues. Well, a note has already gone out to campus, but perhaps some retirees and off-campus readers will be interested to know that John is retiring. They're throwing a cake and punch reception for John from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, June 30, in the Vista Conference Room 301 of Mary Ann Cofrin Hall.
