Saturday's weather was picture-perfect for Commencement outdoorsSnapshots from May 24 Commencement: A bagpiper leads the processional; a photography service shows the flag; sun bathing on the grass; Lt. Gov. Lawton returns to the Shorewood site; faculty in full regalia; honoring the Weidner family; and a crowd of several thousand proud graduates, families and friends. Milestone: Davids is first to earn Master's of ManagementUW-Green Bay's own Misty Davids, a multicultural adviser for the American Intercultural Center, is the first recipient of the University's new Master's of Management degree. She was accompanied across the stage by Prof. John Harris. The program made its debut in September 2002. Lost and (not yet) found: a gold ringVisitor Ed Klarkowski showed up for Commencement Saturday and went home without a prized possession, his gold ring. He parked in the Wood Hall lot, got a ride down to the boulevard in a golf cart, and was seated on the grass about midway up the hill on the Cofrin Library side. Once he realized it was missing, he looked and looked, and is now looking for help from any one who might find it. He's at 468-4656.
Nicolet National Forest bird survey can use volunteersIf you're interested in birds and would like to spend a weekend in the Nicolet National Forest, the 17th annual Nicolet National Forest bird survey June 6-8 is for you, regardless of birding expertise. "Everyone can play a role as a timekeeper, data recorder, or extra listener," says Prof. Bob Howe, director of the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity. "One of the best things about the event is the opportunity to improve your birding skills." Headquarters is the LeFeber Northwoods Camp on Hardwood Lake about nine miles northwest of Wabeno, but motels are located nearby, too. Along with the "fun" for human participants, the survey serves the very serious purpose of tracking bird population trends in the forest. For information, including maps and registration forms, the Web site is http://www.uwgb.edu/birds/nnf. Howe can answer questions at hower@uwgb.edu.
Biodiversity Center is co-host for ornithology convention this weekendHere's a reminder that the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology will hold its 64th annual convention at UW-Green Bay Friday through Sunday morning, May 30-June 1. The conference fee is $25, and some field trips have additional fees. For information and to register, log on to http://www.uwgb.edu/outreach/profed/ornithology.
WSO keynote on Saturday is open to allProf. Ralph Gutierrez, a wildlife management expert with the University of Minnesota, will speak on "California Spotted Owl Conservation: Will the Lessons Learned Help Lake States Bird Conservation?" at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 31, in the University Union. The WSO conference keynote is free and open to all.
Lyall sings praises of UW-Green BayUW System President Katharine Lyall visited campus last week as featured speaker for the UW-Green Bay Founders Association 30th anniversary reception. In a 15-minute address before a campus and community audience of about 200 in the Union's Phoenix Room, Lyall praised the Founders Association for its work on behalf of UW-Green Bay, said the state budget situation was severe but not insurmountable, and predicted that, long-term, UW-Green Bay would grow and flourish with a regional service emphasis under the leadership of Chancellor Bruce Shepard.
Snapshots from an anniversary eveningNan Nelson, Bryan Boettcher, Bob Bush, Ginny Riopelle, Jane Jadin, Elaine Milson, Stuart Stiles, Tom Olson, Lou Weinstein, and many others... some of UW-Green Bay's closest community friends gathered with campus colleagues last Wednesday evening to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Founders Association philanthropic organization. Snapshots of the celebration are at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/photoarch/events/03Fdinner1.htm.
Gathering draws press coverageThe appearance by President Lyall and the nature of the gathering drew media attention. The News-Chronicle coverage (which mentions $40 million as a ballpark figure for total private investment in UW-Green Bay over the years, from annual giving to the Founders to construction of the Weidner Center to support of Phoenix Athletics) is archived at http://www.greenbaynewschronicle.com/page.html?article=120104.
One more Green Bay Marathon report:We've been publishing results from this month's Cellcom Green Bay Marathon. Here is another: Joanne Gardner, instructor in Nutritional Science program, finished the half-marathon in 1:47:00. Congratulations to all who took part. See you in June at the Bellin!
Perhaps UW-Green Bay helped set the patternThe May 22 edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education and the feature article "Inaugurations on the Cheap" held no surprises for those who began planning the simple but festive installation of Bruce Shepard as new UW-Green Bay chancellor more than a year ago. The article highlighted the experience of other institutions, the potential pitfalls of public spending, and what is becoming a trend toward dignified but highly cost-conscious celebrations. It was archived at http://chronicle.com/jobs/2003/05/2003052201c.htm.
