Service for Novak is Thursday at Ecumenical CenterA visitation and memorial service for former UW-Green Bay staff member Robert M. Novak will be held on campus Thursday (May 8) at the Ecumenical Center. Bob died Sunday at his Green Bay home at age 71 following a long illness. He joined UW-Green Bay in January 1970 as coordinator of community relations, and a few months later helped found the Alumni Association with members of the first graduating class. For 23 years he was among UW-Green Bay's most prominent ambassadors as alumni relations director, Information Center and commencement coordinator, and liaison to state government and UW System administration. He was a recipient of the Founders Association Award for Excellence. Thursday's visitation will begin at 2 p.m. and continue until the 5:15 p.m. service.

Today is the day to be appreciated, recognizedFaculty and staff are reminded that today (Wednesday, May 7) is "State Employee Recognition Day," as proclaimed by Gov. Jim Doyle. The proclamation thanks this state's dedicated public servants who contribute significantly to the well-being and quality of life of Wisconsin residents.
In a somewhat-related story, Governor to sign contractsThe Assembly and Senate moved quickly Tuesday to approve a series of labor agreements covering 35,000 state employees including classified and union employees in the University of Wisconsin System. Gov. Doyle said he will sign the contracts today. Inaction on the agreements had effectively frozen pay for the employees for nearly two years. Appreciation for U-W-G-B's Sanders, Callahan, Bassett-Piehl, Bodilly, MatzkeThere will be gooey filled doughnuts all around tomorrow, or maybe spinach/bran muffins, in celebration of first-place awards in the Spring 2003 U-W-G-B Up With Good Bodies healthy-lifestyle program. A total of eight teams took part, with 14 more people entered in the individual category. All were winners (and losers, nearly 150 pounds total), but officially, the winning individual participant was Debbie Sanders. The winning team was:

What's the Heirloom Plant Sale? This explains itEarlier this week the LOG ONLine made a big deal of Friday's "sneak preview" sale at the Lab Sciences greenhouse. It occurs to us now that new employees, in particular, might not have a feel for what the Heirloom Plant Sale is or how it came into existence. A news release tells all at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2003april.htm#heirloom.
Please (pretty please with sugar on top) return your phone book cardsForget to return your yellow Phone Directory information card? Please do so by Friday, May 9, to the University Communication Office, CL 815.
Regents meet Thursday in Stevens PointThe UW-Stevens Point campus is the site for the May meeting of the UW System Board of Regents, this Thursday and Friday. An update on the state budget and a presentation on developments in online learning in Wisconsin are among the agenda items.
False alarmEau Claire-area media carried plenty of reports recently about the fact that two local chancellors each happened to be finalists for new jobs outside the UW System. They're not any more, and the Eau Claire paper provides coverage at http://www.leadertelegram.com/story.asp?id=26481.
Celebrating sun power, despite the cloudsA look out our window confirms that at least some of the participants in the 7th annual Solar Olympics are working outdoors this morning, showing off the designs of their solar cookers and related inventions. The event is sponsored by Wisconsin Public Service Community Foundation and UW-Green Bay. Since this is the third and final rain-day option, organizers decided the show must go on; much of the action takes place inside the University Union anyway, with solar marketing campaigns, photography and essay contests, solar building and tee-shirt designs, and "Solar Jeopardy."
LOG ONline is prepared for University of Wisconsin-Green Bay faculty and staff by the Office of Marketing and University Communication. Employees may submit a Brief, a Publication, a news item, an announcement, or offer feedback; call ext. 2527 or e-mail us at Log@uwgb.edu. |
