Sea Grant publicizes EPA's Green Bay cruises, set for next TuesdayWant to learn more about Green Bay water quality and Great Lakes issues? Our friends at Sea Grant are extending an invitation to join them for a cruise aboard the W.G. Jackson next Tuesday (Aug. 17). The touring 65-foot outreach and education vessel takes out more than 5,000 people per year on educational cruises (see http://www.gvsu.edu/wri/education) as part of the Making Lake Michigan Great project coordinated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Four cruises will take place on Aug. 17, at 9 and 11 a.m., and 1 and 3 p.m. The Jackson's science instructors and crew provide an educational program for groups of up to 30 adults and children age 8 and above. Featured are hands-on water sampling and analysis opportunities as well as presentations about Lake Michigan, Green Bay and water resource issues of concern.
Want to cruise? Sign up nowParticipation in next Tuesday's W.G. Jackson cruises is limited to 30 people on each of the four trips, on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no charge for the cruise. Register by contacting Victoria Harris or Kim McKeefry at the UW-Sea Grant Institute on campus, 465-2798. or email harrisv@uwgb.edu. Please dress appropriately for the weather. The boat is docked at Wisconsin Public Service on the Fox River, just north of the Holiday Inn City Centre. Parking is available in the WPS visitor lot.
Lake Michigan restoration, protection focus of Tuesday workshopThe Tuesday morning mini-cruises leaving from downtown Green Bay are likely to include attendees of that afternoon's major conference at the KI Center. Called the Lake Michigan Restoration and Protection Priorities Workshop, it will include presentations as well as opportunities for citizen input. The event has backing from the Great Lakes Council of Governors, the Great Lakes Commission, the Wisconsin DNR and Sea Grant. University's Nia to dance at Green Bay birthday bashRain or shine, the city of Green Bay's 150th birthday bash and parade go on this Saturday (Aug. 14) at Leicht Memorial Park on the west end of Main Street's Ray Nitschke Bridge. Scheduled to perform at one of the park's stages will be the Nia African dance troupe from UW-Green Bay, at 11 a.m. Free carriage rides leaving from the Meyer Theatre, plenty of food and drink, bed races, games, and historical re-enactments are also part of the fun.
Another UW System chancellor departsThis time, it's William Messner, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Colleges, who ends his tenure on Aug. 31 to accept the presidency of Holyoke Community College in western Massachusetts. There's more on line at http://www.wisinfo.com/heraldtimes/news/archive/local_17209003.shtml.
Finally, a golf-watching tipIf you happen to be watching golf on TV this weekend given all the hype, it will be hard not to look for familiar faces, especially along the rope lines on Hole No. 2. We're told a contingent from the Green Bay area including folks from UW-Green Bay (Franz, Pums and others) will be stationed there as volunteer marshals and "Quiet, please" crowd hushers.
