UW-Green Bay reveals plans for Washington CommonsAs part of an ongoing effort to strengthen connections between campus and community, UW-Green Bay has formally announced creation of its Downtown Learning Center at Washington Commons. The center will open later this summer on the first floor near the Washington Street entrance. The 2,600-square-foot space will include a classroom for up to 50 people, conference room, office, reception area, and storage space. "We want to be Green Bay's University of Wisconsin," says Chancellor Bruce Shepard. "A presence downtown will give the community even a greater sense of ownership of its university." It's the lead item today at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/.
Ribbon-cutting expected in August, but publicity is nowThe Green Bay Press-Gazette gave front-page treatment today to news that UW-Green Bay has signed a five-year contract with Washington Commons. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/local_16731590.shtml. Also, the Green Bay News-Chronicle ran the news release big at http://www.greenbaynewschron.com/page.html?article=126506.
Content is new, timely: emergency management certificateThe first UW-Green Bay courses to meet at Washington Common will offer new opportunities for leaders who prepare for and manage crises. Outreach and Extension's new certificate program in emergency management, planning and administration will be marketed to: public safety personnel (emergency management, airport personnel, fire and police) general public sector managers responsible for emergency management industrial emergency responders (fire and hazardous materials) institutional emergency planners (schools, hospitals and prisons) business continuity planners (banking, manufacturing, insurance and corporations). The program, developed in response to current events and growing interest in the field, has both for-credit and non-credit options. It is co-sponsored by Outreach and the Public and Environmental Affairs academic unit and Environmental Science and Policy graduate program. See http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2004june.htm#management.
One good deed deserves another? Honesty pays? Yes and yes, in this caseLast week, the University Union received a letter and a check in the mail from a student who had erroneously received $18 in change from a campus vending machine in May. "The letter stated 'sorry I didn't send this sooner'," our source tells the LOG, "and asked that we make sure the vending company receive the $18 she was sending back." Of course, the letter and check were forwarded to Konop Vending Company, our vending service provider for the campus. Konop was so touched and impressed with the honesty and kindness the student displayed, they called and thanked the student, and in turn sent the $18 back to her in generous recognition of her honesty. Goodness prevails!
Library's ghost hunters see spike in spooky researchDeb Anderson in the Cofrin Library's Area Research Center says her unit has had an unusual number of requests lately from patrons researching the history of "haunted" properties. Local columnist Tom Perry wrote of it recently in ""For ghosts, who you gonna call? UWGB." See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/local_16592921.shtml.
Lawson 'awesome,' say some, gladsomeThe Lawson HRIS system-wide project is in full swing this summer! Jean Dickinson, Brenda Jerabek and Janice Swiggum report having spent the last four weeks completing a series of comprehensive e-learning Lawson training courses (Human Resources, Benefits and Payroll). In the next phase of the Lawson HRIS training series, they will visit UW-Oshkosh to participate in a two-day hands-on training session. Charged up, revved up and optimistic about Lawson? Yes! They say it will provide the campus with a plethora of opportunities for streamlining our current business processes. Stay tuned to the LOG as we continue to offer updates on the Lawson HRIS Project and the service-oriented technology it will provide the campus.
UW-Green Bay researcher will look at environmental education in schoolsProf. Scott Ashmann of Education has received a $5,000 grant from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board for a study evaluating the use of Model Academic Standards for Environmental Education in rural secondary schools in Northeastern Wisconsin. Ashmann says little is documented in the professional literature about science teaching practices in rural schools, yet rural schools are close to valuable resources forests, streams and farmland for studying the environment. See http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2004june.htm#envgrant.
Tuition hikes, state 'brain drain' of college grads get publicityWisconsin's relatively low percentage of citizens holding four-year degrees is a topic for discussion in the media this week. While the suggestion that rising UW System tuition is solely to blame is a little flawed, the issue and its impact on the state economy are getting welcome, much-needed exposure. An AP report is online at http://www.wisinfo.com/postcrescent/news/archive/local_16706781.shtml.

For the record, official summer enrollment is......about the same as last year, with a headcount of 883 after five weeks of classes. (FTE is about a third of that.) The official count reflects only regular on-campus courses. Extension, remedial, study abroad, high school, summer Extended Degree and agency-funded enrollments are tracked separately.

Former Student Life director gets UW alumni honorRetiree readers of the LOG ONLine might remember Harry L. Peterson. He was director of Student Life Programs for UW-Green Bay during its earliest years, 1969-75. He went on to vice president and deputy chancellor positions at UW-Madison, the University of Idaho and the Minnesota state system, and served as president of Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. Cleaning our inbox, we came across a note that Peterson was honored in May as one of this year's eight recipients of the prestigious UW-Madison Alumni Achievement Award. Congratulations.
BriefProf. Derek Jeffreys, Humanistic Studies, spent the month of June in Marburg, Germany, teaching ethics to German theology students. His visit was part of a program sponsored by the German state of Hesse and the UW System designed to foster academic exchanges.
