Columnist says Regents, new president face tough task

Look for more news late this week on appointment of a successor to Katharine Lyall as UW System President. Regents are scheduled to interview the four finalists on Thursday. Meanwhile, pundit Tom Still makes a good point in his weekly syndicated column: The successful candidate is really going to have to be an optimist. See http://www.wisopinion.com/index.iml?mdl=article.mdl&article=379.

Prize winner offers testimonial for Weidner Center

Becky Wendlick of Suamico, a long-time Weidner Center season ticket holder, was selected as the winner and presented with her prize package in the Earlybird subscriber renewal contest. Weidner Center folks met Becky at her workplace to deliver free tickets, a box of Seroogy's chocolates and flowers from Enchanted Florist. The winner had this to say about her Weidner experiences, "It's wonderful! To live near a city the size of Green Bay and have such a high quality performing arts center is just fabulous. My husband and I really enjoy bringing our children to the Weidner. They always get so excited to see live shows and talk about it for weeks after."

Ideas to boost downtown Green Bay? Hold a Municipal Institute every week!

UW-Green Bay helped energize downtown Green Bay last week by holding most of the annual Municipal Clerks and Treasurers Institute at the Regency Center. We're told that the week-long conference — organized by Outreach and Extension for several hundred municipal officials from around the state — was the Regency's biggest booking for July. Conference-goers filled the Suites and spilled over to the Days Inn and Holiday Inn nearby. When they weren't pursuing continuing education, they helped the local economy in other ways, too: Bags full of Younkers merchandise served as the unofficial conference badge once attendees discovered the store's final clearance sale.

Press-Gazette notes need for more financial aid

Concerning the relative affordability of a college education these days, it's easy to get mixed signals. Federal tax breaks have had a positive impact, as recent studies show, but gains are being erased by massive state disinvestment in higher ed. The editorial page editor of the Green Bay Press-Gazette tries to make sense of the trends, at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/opinion_16926051.shtml.
