'Brown County Diversity Circles' project gets $10,000 grantUW-Extension has awarded a $10,000 grant to a project aimed at improving relations among diverse populations in Brown County. "Brown County Diversity Circles: Transforming Our Community Through Public Dialogue" involves more than 20 community groups including UW-Green Bay faculty, staff and students. It's a local take on a national initiative that emphasizes moving from dialogue to action. Barbara McClure-Lukens of Outreach and Extension is campus contact. Timely topic: Fiala's book examines war, peace, 'Practical Pacifism'"Practical Pacifism," a new book by UW-Green Bay's Andrew Fiala, argues that while war might sometimes be justified, "most of us do not know whether the wars that are fought in our names are justifiable." The book grew out of the philosophy professor's reflections on the attacks of September 11, the U.S. declaration of war on terrorism, and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Support Upward Bound! Eat a brat, wash your carThe Upward Bound pre-college program is running a pair of special fund-raisers on Thursday (June 24). Adviser Kurt Walli asks that you patronize the Upward Bound brat fries at Festival Foods (East) or the University Avenue Super Valu between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Also on Thursday, students in the program will be running a pair of car washes, at the Auto Zones stores (East and West, 1761 Main Street and 1168 West Mason) between 1 and 4 p.m.
Dragonfly workshopThey're cool-looking and eat mosquitoes. Need any other reasons to love dragonflies? Registration is open now for Wisconsin Dragonflies, a workshop scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 24 by the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity. The workshop is free, but pre-registration is required due to space limitations. Workshop leaders are Amy Wolf, Joan Berkopec and Ron Eichhorn. Sports news today: Division I programs (including Phoenix) will play D-III'sPhoenix men's basketball coach Tod Kowalczyk is quoted indirectly in a Journal-Sentinel sports story today. The Wisconsin Badgers, as well as the Phoenix and UW-M Panthers, are moving away from scheduling AAU and touring all-star teams in favor of pre-season games with nearby small-college programs. Search committee in place at UW-River FallsA 17-member search-and-screen committee has been appointed by UW System President Katharine C. Lyall to help identify a successor to the late UW-River Falls Chancellor Ann Lydecker. The committee will be chaired by Terry Brown; she is a UW-River Falls professor of English.
