Today's visitors? FOCUS folksAbout 160 new freshmen and their families, probably 400 people in all, are visiting UW-Green Bay today as the FOCUS: Registration and Resources sessions get under way. Students will obtain IDs, register for courses and get better acquainted with campus; parents take part in tours and information sessions. Today's events are repeated Wednesday and Thursday this week, and Monday through Wednesday (June 14-16) next week.
Focusing on retentionMany staff and faculty are participating in FOCUS welcome activities, and with good reason. FOCUS or First-year Opportunities and Connections for UW-Green Bay Students is a series of programs aimed at connecting incoming freshmen with campus and peers. Research shows involvement to be a predictor of academic persistence.
Updates on University Dining, Singh, ButtkeSarjit Singh, who has served as the catering manager for the University since Sodexho became the institution's dining partner in 2002, has been named general manager for the Sodexho account at Ripon College. His colleagues congratulate Sarj on this exciting professional opportunity. University Dining Services' general manager, Jeff Lee, and Executive Chef Tim Hummel will continue to maintain the excellent level of service that Sarj was instrumental in establishing during his tenure; the search for his successor is getting under way. Another change to note: Anne Buttke, University Union director, now serves as the contract administrator for University Dining Services with the recent retirement of Kurt Willmann.
UW-Green Bay education students help critique educational CD-ROMAt least a dozen UW-Green Bay education students are involved with a national project to develop instructional technology for college classes. They are critiquing a supplemental CD-ROM that will accompany humanities textbooks from McGraw-Hill. Prof. Joyce Salisbury is an author; the students are enrolled in an instructional technology class. See "UWGB students run instructional CD through paces" at the Press-Gazette Web site, http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/local_16377014.shtml.

The deluxe gas grill is on display in the Shorewood Clubhouse. Any questions about the raffle or any of the prizes may be directed to Shorewood at 465-2118 or shorewood@uwgb.edu.

UW System's FY 05 budget will make news this weekThe UW System Board of Regents will vote on the statewide operating budget for fiscal year 2004-05 at its meeting this Thursday (June 10) in Milwaukee. A UW System news release has details at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2004/r040608.htm.
TABOR shelved, for nowThe controversial "Taxpayer Bill of Rights" proposal to cap government spending by amending the state Constitution appears unlikely to pass the Legislature during 2004. The headline in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reads, "Tax-limiting amendment might be on hold until January." See http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/jun04/234494.asp.
