UW-Green Bay example headlines new 'Wisconsin Ideas'

How are state budget cuts hitting home on UW System campuses around the state? As reported by Marketing and Communications' Scott Hildebrand for the online UW System magazine, the story here has been gradual but sustained erosion manifesting itself in many ways. Here's the lead-in:

For years, even decades, UW-Green Bay treated the message like a badge of distinction: Come to school here and you will find the personal touch that only a small campus can provide. After another round of budget cuts-the deepest in UW-Green Bay's 36-year history-the university may have to fine-tune its message.

Story behind the selection: Akiwowo 'distinguished' for youth, international work

We've announced that Christian Akiwowo '74 of suburban Chicago will receive the UW-Green Bay Alumni Association's 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award in a campus program March 20. (You're invited.) What we haven't told yet is the back story, which describes how a young soccer player from Nigeria excelled in academics and launched a career that would attract international recognition for his work as an educator and practitioner working with children and families. The story starts at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/.

Men will celebrate impressive season on March 28

Despite last week's loss at Butler in the Horizon League quarterfinals, the UW-Green Bay men's basketball team is feeling proud of its 17-11 final record and third-place finish in the regular-season standings. The program's best season in five years was highlighted by a nine-game winning streak. Junior guard Brandon Morris was a second team all-conference selection. The postseason banquet takes place Sunday, March 28, at Brett Favre's Steakhouse. For tickets, go to http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/news/030304.html.

Attendance is a positive, too

February crowds of 5,624... 4,778... 4,759... and 4,722 were additional indications of a successful turnaround for the men's basketball program. The season average of 4,249, while level with the previous year, was achieved without benefit of a virtual sellout vs. Wisconsin and the curiosity factor of a brand-new Resch Center that boosted the 2002-03 figures. AD Ken Bothof credits new coach Tod Kowalczyk, marketing director Robert Brooks and a surge in UW-Green Bay student tickets for the progress. 'The Tree' falls: Shorewood's unfair fairway hazard is firewood

Whether you loved it or hated it — and every golfer, it seems, had an opinion — the black locust tree smack dab in the middle of the No. 9 fairway at Shorewood Golf Course will be missed. Course manager Rick Warpinski said removal of the tree, a collaborative decision by Shorewood Golf Course personnel, was motivated mostly be safety and customer feedback. For more, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.
