International Office reacts to news of bombings in Spain

Prof. Cristina Ortiz and others in UW-Green Bay's Office of International Education are working the phones and the Internet to contact UWGB students studying in Spain in the wake of this morning's horrific terrorist bombings in Madrid. Early reports say at least 190 people are dead and more than a thousand injured following coordinated attacks on commuter trains. UW-Green Bay has longstanding exchange and study-tour arrangements with universities located in the region; four students are studying in Spain this semester. The University of Leon is assisting Ortiz in contacting the Green Bay students. One has already confirmed she is OK; so far, the U.S. Embassy is saying no American citizens were victims of the attack. The International Education Office is also acting as a resource today for students from Spain who are studying at UW-Green Bay this semester. Major news sites are providing extensive coverage; one is CNN at http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/03/11/spain.blasts/index.html.
