Saturday's commencement will feature Weidner

UW-Green Bay's founding Chancellor Edward Weidner will give the commencement address Saturday to about 670 graduates, their families and friends. The ceremony gets under way at 11:30 a.m. in the outdoor amphitheater north of the campus's main entrance drive. A split-ceremony plan is in place in the case of rain. Campus cookout draws 400

Although held indoors at the Phoenix Sports Center because of cool weather, the annual campus cookout Wednesday (May 5) drew a large, hungry crowd. The event recognized retiring UW-Green Bay employees and fit in well with State Employee Recognition Day. Six from UWGB are among first "Wisconsin Idea Fellows"

What do UW-Green Bay's Doug Gjerde, H.J. (Bud) Harris, John Katers, Meir Russ, Larry Smith and Kassie Van Remortel have in common? They are all among the first 100 UW System "Wisconsin Idea Fellows." Career Services partnership receives state recognition

UW-Green Bay Career Services' partnership with Revitalize Gillett, Inc. was honored recently by the state Main Street Program. Career Services has provided Revitalize Gillett with student interns working in the areas of historical research, marketing and graphic design. The partnership was featured in a cover story in the spring 2003 issue of UW-Green Bay's Inside magazine. The Main Street Program helps communities promote the historic and economic redevelopment of their downtown business districts. Gutowski retirement gathering set

Off-campus readers of the LOG Online may not yet have heard that Sharon Gutowski, longtime assistant to the chancellor, has announced her retirement. The campus community will have an opportunity to thank Sharon for her years of outstanding service to UW-Green Bay at a retirement reception May 25. The farewell celebration is from 2 to 4 p.m. in the University Union's 1965 Room.

Marcec-Ehrfurth starts in Chancellor's office today

Paula Marcec-Ehrfurth has joined UW-Green Bay as the new assistant to the chancellor. She brings years of experience to the important position. Paula started on the job today and will work side-by-side with Sharon for two weeks.

2003-04 Weidner Center season winds down with top performances

Another season of arts and entertainment at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts is drawing to a close. You still can catch the internationally-acclaimed Riverdance (a celebration of Irish music, song and dance), singer Chava Alberstein, folk musicians John Gorka and Patty Larkin, and cellist Maya Beiser and pianist Anthony de Mare performing music from their CD, Oblivion. Chihuly chandelier to hang at Weidner Center

Founders Association reception features UW-Green Bay authors

The UW-Green Bay Founders Association Spring 2004 Reception put the spotlight on the University's faculty authors. The reception in the Weidner Center's Grand Foyer on Wednesday (May 5) provided an opportunity for community members to learn more about the extensive work of UW-Green Bay authors. Workshop on ponds organisms is Saturday

The Cofrin Center for Biodiversity will host a workshop Saturday (May 15) at which participants will learn how to identify small and microscopic animals and plants that live in ponds. City Web site has new Sesquicentennial feature

A new feature on the city of Green Bay's Web site gives visitors a photo exhibit of the city's Sesquicentennial gala in February and includes links to upcoming events. UW-Green Bay is among the partners involved in planning the city's 150th birthday celebration. Search for Lyall successor looks at academia, business

The committee searching for a successor to retiring UW System President Katharine Lyall is looking for candidates not only from the academic world, but also the business community. Langteau is new dean at UW-Marinette

The University of Wisconsin-Marinette has a new campus dean and chief executive officer. She's Paula Langteau, who has been dean of instruction at Nicolet Area Technical College in Rhinelander. Credit transfer policy to help UW, WTCS students

Volleyball team 'digs' community service

The UW-Green Bay Phoenix volleyball team was honored with the Horizon League Excellence Award for nearly 500 hours of community service performed by the 13-member squad. Together, UW-Green Bay student-athletes completed more than 2,400 hours of community service during the 2003-04 academic year.

Sizzling good time with Phoenix Athletics

The Fourth Annual Phoenix-Packers Steak Fry is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday (May 18) at Lambeau Field's Verizon Wireless gate. Proceeds benefit the UW-Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball program. Tickets are $75 apiece and are on sale at the Phoenix ticket office at 465-2625.

Softball team seeded 6th in Horizon Tourney

The UW-Green Bay Phoenix softball team earned the 6th seed for the 2004 Horizon League Softball Championship beginning Thursday (May 13). Raffle tickets still available for Library fundraiser

Raffle tickets still can be purchased for "Books and Baskets," the annual fundraiser for the Friends of the Cofrin Library. Raffled off this year are five themed gift "baskets," each with one or more books pertaining to the theme.
