Weidner Center offers faculty/staff a 50% discount on Lifelines seriesThe Weidner Center announces today a UW-Green Bay faculty and staff holiday discount for Lifelines: engaging stories, exceptional lives featuring four standout women in Joan Rivers, Mariane Pearl, Madeleine Albright and Maya Angelou. Details: The 50% discount applies to seats in the Mezzanine and Balcony purchased by UW-Green Bay faculty and staff between Dec. 18 and 31. Series tickets include one ticket to each of the four events as well as access to the pre-show showcase at 5:30 pm prior to each event featuring approximately 16 information and resource booths. This offer is valid for up to six series packages purchased by a faculty member or staff of UW-Green Bay. Mezzanine series tickets will be reduced from $196 to $98 until 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31. Balcony series ticket will be reduced from $156 to $78 until 2 p.m. on Dec. 31. This offer is redeemable by calling the Weidner Center box office at 920-465-2217 or visiting the Weidner Ticket Office during normal business hours. When ordering you must request the discount and provide the code phrase "UWGB-Perk."

The Weidner Center notes that there are still a limited number of main floor seats available at full price for those employees who wish to purchase without the discount. (Each speaker will be projected onto a large video screen to ensure that people in every seating section will have a quality experience.) Council seeks your feedback on Tech Plan 2010The Technology Council has posted draft 8 of Tech Plan 2010 on its Web site at http://www.uwgb.edu/techcouncil/. The latest revision is the result of input from faculty, staff, students and administrators gathered through Web surveys, open forums and constituent group meetings held between April and October. Tech Plan 2010 is being submitted to the Cabinet for final review. When the plan is approved, the Technology Council will develop an Action Plan to implement the top priorities for 2005-2007. You can still provide feedback or submit questions on the Web site by clicking on "Feedback". You can also contact any member of the Technology Council (click on "Council Members") to express your views.
Teaching Grants go to Marker, Abel, Coury, Gurung, Gushwa, Von DrasThe Instructional Development Council approved Teaching Enhancement Grants totaling $3,601 for six faculty members during fall semester. The grants ranged from $200 to $750 each. Heidi Fencl, Natural and Applied Sciences, chairs the Council that invites proposals and awards grants for activities that will enhance teaching skills or develop innovative teaching strategies. Grants went to: James Marker, Human Biology, who received two grants-one to attend the Physiology Teaching Conference in April 2005, and another to develop a library of songs to support teaching of physiology and anatomy; Troy Abel, Public and Environmental Affairs, attendance at the American Political Science Association Teaching and Learning workshop in Feb. 2005; David Coury, Humanistic Studies, purchase of teaching materials for a new course on Hmong language; Regan Gurung, Human Development, attendance at the Teaching Social and Personality Psychology conference in Jan. 2005; Melinda Gushwa, Social Work, software purchase and travel expenses to develop a computer-based child welfare program; Dean Von Dras, Human Development, attendance at the American Psychological Society Teaching conference in May 2005.
CorrectionAs the result of an editing error in last week's LOG newsletter, a news item understated Prof. Ray Hutchison's involvement in the new Encyclopedia of Urban Studies. He's not only a member of the editorial board, he appointed it in his position as Senior Editor. See the following for full details.
Hutchison names editorial board of 'Encyclopedia of Urban Studies'Prof. Ray Hutchison, chair of Urban and Regional Studies, will serve as Senior Editor for the Encyclopedia of Urban Studies, a new three-volume encyclopedia from Sage Publications scheduled for publication in 2006. Professor Hutchison reports that he wanted the editorial board for the encyclopedia to include persons from the many different disciplines and intersections across urban studies, and also to include persons from outside the United States to better capture current ideas and research from scholars around the globe. Serving on the editorial board with Dr. Hutchison are Nan Ellin (Arizona State University), Robert Beauregard (New School for Social Research), Anne Haila (University of Helsinki), Mike Crang (University of Durham), and Carlos Reboratti (Universidad Buenos Aires).

In Minnesota, student debt is causing concernThe Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System released a study last week showing that 30 percent more students relied on loans in 2003-04 compared with two years earlier, and the average amount they borrowed increased by 23 percent. Bayfest 25th anniversary celebration starts June 9Mark your calendar the 25th anniversary of Bayfest will be held June 9th through the 12th, 2005. The community music and food festival benefits scholarships for deserving UW-Green Bay men and women student athletes and also connects with the community by involving participation by many community nonprofit organizations. Our own alumni association runs the corn tent. Other groups involved includes the Downtown Kiwanis Club, Greater Green Bay Optimist, Green Bay Jaycees, Northeast Kiwanis Club, Optimist Club of Green Bay, Paul's Pantry, Redeemer Lutheran School and St. Mathew's Orthodox Church. All gate and ticket seller/collectors are volunteer UW-Green Bay faculty and staff members.
