Phuture Phoenix receives state diversity award

The Phuture Phoenix program has received state recognition for its efforts to encourage students to complete high school and pursue a college education. The Office of State Employment Relations and the State Council on Affirmative Action awarded Phuture Phoenix the first annual Ann Lydecker Award for Education. The award recognizes innovative practices to promote diversity. UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard and his wife, Cyndie, who serves as director of Phuture Phoenix, accepted the award in a ceremony at the State Capitol. For more on the award and Phuture Phoenix, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2004oct.htm#diversity.

The final Employee Drive numbers are in...kind of...

Shane Kohl, director of Annual Giving, reports that the latest Employee Drive figures show more than $29,800 has been raised through the faculty and staff campaign (up nearly 15% over last year) from 191 donors. Of those 191, a total of 47 increased their gift over last year, and an impressive number (50 employees) made first-time gifts through the Employee Drive. Shane also sends word that employee drive gifts — and, in fact, all gifts — are always welcome. For more information, contact Shane at ext. 2018.

Thirsty? One lucky employee drive raffle winner can help

You'll remember that as an incentive to invest in the Employee Drive this year, the Founders Association, in partnership with Sodexho, was offering one lucky winner drinks for a year (or the equivalent of 180 of the most expensive Starbucks 20oz drinks Sodexho has to offer). The lucky and, if she so chooses, hyper-caffeinated winner is...Kathy Pletcher, associate provost for information services. Thanks flow out to Kathy and everyone who made a gift through the Employee Drive this year.

Third annual Alumni/Employee Challenge — the 'old-timers' win again

The UW-Green Bay Alumni/Employee Challenge has come to a close and it looks like it will be another 12 months of gloating for the alums of the 1970s. For the third year in a row, alums who remember the days of options and concentrations had the highest participation rate in this year's Employee Drive. Here's a look at how the numbers stacked-up:

1970's: 65% participation rate
2000's: 37% participation
1980's: 35% participation
1990's: 33% participation

Thank you to everyone who made a gift this year...and Go Phoenix!

Birthday gift by alumnus brings classical guitarist for free concert tonight

Classical guitarist Manuel Rubio will present a concert, "Music of the Old and New Worlds," at 7 p.m. tonight (Monday, Nov. 1) in the Union's Christie Theatre. The public is invited to the free event. Rubio presently is dean of the Guitar Department at the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan. Rubio's visit to Green Bay is sponsored by guitar-maker and retired chiropractor Frederico Sheppard, who says it is his present to the community on the occasion of his own birthday on Nov. 1. Sheppard came to the U.S. from Mexico at age 16 and moved from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin in the 1970s to attend UW-Green Bay. He developed an interest in guitar making during that time and has continued to study and pursue the craft. For more, read http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2004oct.htm.

No Dunst, but Heinz boys draw a crowd

Last Thursday's LOG ONLine announcement about that day's celebrity caravan wasn't totally accurate — popular actress Kirstin Dunst missed the trip — but other actresses and John Kerry's two stepsons drew a crowd of about 250 to an outdoor program near MAC Hall. The News-Chronicle covered it and got students' opinions at http://www.greenbaynewschron.com/page.html?article=128308.
