In the event of bad weather, we'll move to the MAC Hall winter garden. Please wear your alma mater's colors, or in the case of those who have not graduated from a UW System university, the colors of your favorite college. (How about Phoenix green?) See you at 1 p.m.
Phuture Phoenix gets $10,000 grant to strengthen mentoring, retentionAnnounced today at a meeting of the Phuture Phoenix Philanthropists organization was a $10,000 grant that will allow UW-Green Bay students to spend more focused time mentoring youngsters involved in the program. The grant is from the Wisconsin Campus Compact. Phuture Phoenix director Cyndie Shepard says UW-Green Bay students selected for training will provide additional support for youngsters who first get involved with the Phuture Phoenix program in the 5th grade. Symposium highlights academic excellence of student researchersRemember: UW-Green Bay students will present their outstanding scholarly and creative work to the campus community and general public Tuesday, April 19, at the University's fourth annual Academic Excellence Symposium. About 120 UW-Green Bay students will exhibit 54 projects at the Symposium, which runs from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Phoenix Room of the University Union. Borseth news conference is open to public at 11 a.m. tomorrowUW-Green Bay women's basketball head coach Kevin Borseth will hold a news conference Friday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at the Phoenix Sports Center. The press conference is open to the public, and the campus community is welcome to attend.
Arrest made in Credit Union robbery at UW-Green BayThe following news release was issued by Randy Christopherson, Public Safety director at UW-Green Bay: "Over the past four months University Police have been working in conjunction with Green Bay Police and the FBI investigating the Armed Robbery of the UW Credit Union on December 22, 2004, and the Armed Robbery five days later at the M & I Bank located on Main Street in Green Bay. "Ashwaubenon Public Safety Officers developed an informant who provided information to Green Bay Police Detectives on the two robberies. On Monday April 11 at approximately 2:30 pm investigators conducted a consent search at 1835 Eldorado Drive in Bellevue. The search of the property turned up a replica handgun and numerous articles of clothing that were consistent with those worn during both robberies. No money was recovered. Arrested at that address was a Derek Ballard DOB 09/21/64. Ballard had been staying at that address with a friend. "Ballard was arrested for both robberies and is currently being held at the Brown County Jail. Charges are being referred to the Brown County District Attorney's Office for two counts of Armed Robbery. The investigation involving both robberies is ongoing."
UW-Green Bay, St. Norbert College partner on Saturday's HIV-AIDS programUW-Green Bay is partnering with St. Norbert College to host "HIV-AIDS: A Social Threat To Our World And Community," a gathering of local and international experts. The symposium takes place Saturday (April 16) at the Bemis International Center on the SNC campus. Organizers issue 'heads up' for heirloom vegetables at UW-Green BayHeirloom tomatoes and peppers go on sale Saturday, May 21 in the Laboratory Sciences Building greenhouse. The plants are $1 each. Sale coordinator is Vicki Medland, an adjunct faculty member at UW-Green Bay. The annual heirloom sale took a year off in 2004, but it's back this year with seeds of 43 different tomato varieties and 20 different peppers growing in the greenhouse. Proceeds benefit NAS to bring speakers to campus and support student travel to professional conferences. Faculty will assist with awards presentationChancellor Bruce Shepard will offer greetings and more than a dozen current and past UW-Green Bay faculty members are expected to be in attendance at Saturday's Alumni Awards Night. Prof. Patricia Terry will present the Outstanding Thesis Award to Theresa Qualls; Profs. Ray Hutchison and Donna Ritch will present the awards for Outstanding Recent Alumni to Naletta Burr '98 and Tina Sauerhammer '99, respectively.
Social Work invites all to April 26 presentation on Hmong in AmericaMaiker Vang will talk about the Hmong people on Tuesday, April 26th from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the Christie Theatre. While she is coming to speak to an ethnic studies course offered through the Social Work program, her presentation is open to all. Ms. Vang will share an overview of Hmong history, refugee stories, Hmong lives in the United States, the clan structure, Hmong leaders/organizations, and effective ways for providers or organizations to work with Hmong clients. Ms. Vang, currently a juvenile intake/intensive in-home social worker for Portage County Health & Human Services, has extensive experience working with Hmong, Laotian, Vietnamese and Cambodian refugee communities. UW-Green Bay creates a world for 'Midsummer Night's Dream'The UW-Green Bay Theater department will present William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 22-23 and Thursday through Saturday April 28-30 in University Theater. Director John Mariano says the production will draw upon images from Celtic folklore and mythology to tell Shakespeare's story of two pairs of young lovers who flee to the forest to escape an arranged marriage. Governor Doyle proclaims 'UW Spirit Week'For the record, Governor Jim Doyle kicked off "University of Wisconsin Spirit Week" at a celebration Wednesday, April 13, in the Governor's Conference Room of the State Capitol. "UW Spirit Week" is an opportunity for alumni, students, members of UW System communities, and Wisconsin citizens to celebrate campus allegiances and the many contributions the university makes to the state.
