Reilly shares System position on employee convictionsUW System President Kevin Reilly explained to state legislators Friday that while he shares their concerns about recent felony convictions of several UW faculty members, state statutes require due process before action can be taken. "The crimes of which these individuals stand convicted are reprehensible," he wrote, in part. "That is why we initiated, in each of these instances, the process that will lead to discipline or dismissal." The President added that, with the Board of Regents reviewing a number of university employment practices, he will ask that the review extend to disciplinary procedures in circumstances of this nature.
Internet donations on the rise, nationallyMany on campus may be interested in a rising trend described in a recent report by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education that showed 8.6 million American households donated an upwards of $3 billion dollars online in 2004. That number is up 50 percent from 2003. The report showed that people are not only using the Internet to make donations but also to research the non-profit organizations they give to. Sixty-five percent of donors logged on to at least one website before making a donation. In addition, the study found that donors who gave online usually gave about 50 percent more than those who gave by other means. Life imitates art: Attempted satire puts Dahmer at UWThis newsletter was trying to be outrageously ridiculous with Friday's facetious LOG lead-in - that UW critics are probably googling the names of notorious villains for university ties. In reality, in today's climate, maybe that's not too far-fetched. Check out the satirical column on "Prof." Jeffrey Dahmer that, unbeknownst to us, had appeared recently in the Oshkosh newspaper. See http://www.wisinfo.com/northwestern/news/ columns/stories/columns_22174355.shtml
