Vol. 36, No. 112 / August 8, 2005The LOG Online e-mail news digest is distributed each week to faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Links are included to more detailed stories at the Marketing and University Communication Web site and to an archive of past issues.
Flags at half-staff today, and TuesdayGov. Doyle has directed that the flag of the United States and the flag of the State of Wisconsin be flown at half-state from sunrise to sundown today (Monday, Aug. 8) as a mark of respect for Marine Corps Reserve Staff Sgt. Chad Simon. Another directive orders the same honor Tuesday (Aug. 9) for Army Specialist John Tollefson. Both men were killed in action recently in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Editorial questions rationale of UW 'micromanaging'Regarding the proposal for a so-called "student's bill of rights," the Wisconsin State Journal weighs in with major skepticism. See 'Rights' bill micromanages UW" at http://www.madison.com/ wsj/home/opinion/index.php?ntid=49599&ntpid=0.
Article touts program's beneifts for students of colorHere's a positive story about the UW System: The McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program is encouraging low-income, minority and first-generation students — some of whom "weren't supposed to go to college," at all — to go further still. Read the Journal-Sentinel's account of how three students, of American Indian, Palestinian and Mexican heritage, are making plans for graduate school: http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/aug05/346844.asp.
Follow-up: Nation's top student employee is from WisconsinRemember the Student Employee of the Year competition that took place here in April? While UW-Green Bay's outstanding nominee, Ericka Heckendorf (http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/thenews.htm#employee), was not selected at the state level, her counterpart from Marquette University advanced all the way to become NSEA Student Employee of the Year. Daniel Hamrin of Wauwatosa was student-employee coordinator for a staff of about 400 at Marquette's Alumni Memorial Union.
'Let's make UW-Green Bay's next nominee the national winner'Becky Wendt, student employment coordinator in UW-Green Bay's Financial Aid Office and an organizer of this year's recognition activities, calls attention to the following: "As our student workers return for another year of employment, please pay special attention to the extra efforts of those exceptional student employees in preparation for the 2006 Student Employee of the Year Competition. Nomination forms will be made available in January 2006. Also, mark your calendars for another fun-filled Student Employment Appreciation Week, which will take place April 9-16, 2006."
Deductions kick in on health care for represented employeesThe newly approved labor agreements between the state of Wisconsin and WSEU bargaining units (Administrative Support, Blue Collar, Technical and Security and Public Safety) mean that, beginning this month, certain represented employees will see health insurance premiums deducted from their paychecks at the rate of $22 single and $55 family for Tier 1 plans; $50 or $125 for Tier II, and $100 or $250 for Tier III.
Nalbandian is new regional director of WPRThe UW Extension newsletter announces that Lisa Nalbandian has been named Wisconsin Public Radio regional manager for Northeastern Wisconsin. She is based at the WPR offices on the UW-Green Bay campus. She succeeds longtime manager Glen Slaats, whose retirement was announced last November.
Reminder: Salisbury reception is Aug. 23For those who might have otherwise missed the all-campus posting, here's a reminder that the retirement reception for Associate Dean and Prof. Joyce Salisbury is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the 1965 Room of the University Union.
Wisconsin Campus Compact looking for a new executive directorThomas Schnaubelt, Ph.D., executive director of Wisconsin Campus Compact, is moving on to accept the newly created position of dean of community engagement at UW-Parkside. He wrote the membership recently to say, "Wisconsin Campus Compact is well-launched. Although 29 states formed Compacts before Wisconsin, few have accomplished so much in such a short amount of time." The position posting is now on line. Review of applications will begin August 19, 2005. Applications must be received by September 2, 2005. See http:// www.wicampuscompact.org.
Partial list of backup appointmentsLeft over from the recent flurry of news coverage on "backup appointments" is the following item from the Capital Times. Headlined "46 at UW have backup job rights," the story about UW System personnel is archived at http://www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/index.php?ntid=48398&ntpid=2.
Finally, one vote in favor of celebrating 'Brutalist' architectureThis last item isn't really news, but for those of us who once spent significant time at UW-Madison in the Humanities Building or Vilas Hall, or much closer to home in facilities that shall remain nameless, contained here are interesting observations about the familiar 1960s architectural style known as "Brutalism." See http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/jul05/343499.asp.
