Gov. Doyle will visit Saturday

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle and his wife, Jessica, will be guests of Bruce and Cyndie Shepard this weekend in Green Bay. The governor will be introduced during Saturday night's Milwaukee-Green Bay men's basketball game at the Resch Center. He and State Sen. Dave Hansen will be acknowledged for their support of state funding for the new student sports and events center on campus. Also attending the game as guests of the Shepards will be first-year UW-Milwaukee chancellor, Carlos Santiago.

New scholarship adds to NAS list of winners

A just-created Moose Lodge Rod and Gun Club Scholarship enabled the Natural and Applied Sciences academic program to honor one more student at its Friday, Jan. 28 reception for scholarship recipients. Biology major Stacy Ann Nye, a junior, was awarded the $500 scholarship. It is designated for students pursuing studies in water quality, soil conservation, or wildlife. Nye is participating in the black bear research project organized by Prof. Robert Howe of the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity and Two Rivers veterinarian Dr. Chris Katz. The names of 10 other scholarship recipients were announced earlier in January.

Passing of Sue Kline-Heim

For the benefit of LOG's off-campus readers who would not have received the all-campus posting... News has been received of the death of Associate Professor Emerita Sue Kline-Heim. A 1984 graduate of UW-Green Bay, she served on the theatre faculty. Arrangements have not yet been finalized, but a funeral is likely to be held Monday in Marinette.

Press-Gazette features UW-Green Bay travel course in Costa Rica

A story in today's Green Bay Press-Gazette described the experiences of a group of UW-Green Bay students and faculty that visited a Costa Rican national park over semester break. 'Downtown Connecting' topics: Labor unions, marketplace research

The popular series of informal luncheons in downtown Green Bay showcasing the University and its faculty continues this year with two learning luncheons at the Holiday Inn City Centre. Andrew Kersten, UW-Green Bay associate professor of Social Change and Development, will speak Thursday, Feb. 17 about "Why Unions Matter: The Labor Movement's Unique and Essential Role in America's Past, Present and Future." Vishal Lala of the UW-Green Bay Business Administration faculty will speak Thursday, April 14 on "Effective Decision Making: Insights from Marketplace Research." Larmouth, Weidner, Spangenberg, Slaats noted for early support for Phoenix

Former Phoenix women's basketball player Pam Roecker, in town today serving as master of ceremonies for the No Limits! fundraiser, was featured in Thursday's Green Bay Press- Gazette. She noted the unprecedented support (acknowledging Prof. Don Larmouth, Chancellor Ed Weidner, retired staff member Rich Spangenberg and play-by-play announcer Glen Slaats, by name) for women's basketball on this campus well before its time. Favor Hamilton eager to speak at No Limits!

No Limits! keynote speaker Suzy Favor Hamilton, says she jumped at the chance to be a part of the No Limits event. The three-time Olympian will tell about her rise to international notoriety from her hometown of Stevens Point. The Post-Crescent reported on the topic Tuesday. Team up for cancer fight

Consider becoming part of the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life event, Saturday, April 9. North Indian music lecture/performance is Wednesday

Sandip Burman, a native of Durgapur, India, will offer a lecture/performance from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2 at the University Theatre. Burman is a disciple of the late distinguished tabla master, Pandit Shyamal Bose of Calcutta. He has performed with greatest Indian musicians of his time and many jazz legends. The campus and community are invited to observe all or a portion of the event.

Up With Good Bodies, the healthy lifestyle program sponsored by Counseling and Health Services, invites teams and individuals to engage in friendly competition with each other as they work toward a personal weight goal (to gain, lose or maintain) over 10 weeks. Select one mandatory meeting to attend in the Counseling & Health conference room (SS 1400):

Monday, Feb. 7 from Noon to 1:00 p.m. or 5 to 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. or 5 to 6 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 9 from 9 to 10:00 a.m. or 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Big Fat Greek Luncheon?

I guess it depends how much you eat. If the next Cultural Cuisine meal is as good as the 'Greek' blockbuster, it'll be worth your while to attend. The menu includes Greek lemon egg drop soup w/ oyster crackers, fresh tossed Greek salad, Greek style shrimp, lemon garlic grilled pitas, chef carved chicken or lamb gyros and fried Greek sweet potato straws. Desserts are baklava and Greek spinach and feta cheese turnovers. Cost is $8 for students, $9.50 for faculty and staff, and $10.50 for community members. Purchase your tickets in advance from the University Information Center, through February 16.

Register soon for Native Plants, a 'Thoughtful Gardener' workshop

Registration is open for "Successful Gardening with Native Plants," a workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19 on campus. The one-day workshop, part of UW-Green Bay's "Thoughtful Gardener" series, will explore the benefits and how-to of gardening in harmony with nature. Designed for the experienced or new gardeners, especially those new to natural landscaping. Naturalist, educator and author Roy Lukes will be the conference keynote speaker. The conference fee is $44 for members of sponsoring groups and $49 for non-members. Weidner's LifeLines' series announces showcase events

Participants for the Bellin Health LifeLines series will be treated to discussions and information from the shows' sponsors and community partners before and after each guest performance. Experts and specialists in topics such as health and wellness, literature, personal and professional growth, unique gifts, and family and home, will be on hand. The showcase exhibits open at 5:30 p.m. Ticket holders are encouraged to come early.

Brief

Sue Bodilly, an editor in the Office of University Marketing and Communication, will be inducted to the Southern Door High School Hall of Fame this evening (Jan. 28). Bodilly, formerly Klaubauf, was a standout volleyball and basketball player for the Eagles. She went on to a successful basketball career as the point guard for the Phoenix women's basketball team from 1983-1987 &3151; the program's strong NAIA years - and was inducted into the Phoenix Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.
