Doyle says budget keeps state on course to "brighter future"

Gov. Jim Doyle today signed the 2005-07 state budget, bringing the budget process to a close 167 days after he introduced his plan to the state Legislature. Doyle, who last week announced budget vetoes related to the University of Wisconsin System, signed the budget bill at the Executive Residence in Madison and later discussed his actions during appearances across the state (including in Green Bay). A news release about the governor's budget decisions is available online at http://www.wisgov.state.wi.us/journal_media_detail.asp?prid=1241. Policy wonks and others interested in more detail can find the text of the governor's budget-signing message at http://www.wisgov.state.wi.us/journal_media_detail.asp?prid=1243.

Media coverage of budget news

Wisconsin newspapers wasted little time in getting news about the governor's actions onto their Web editions. A report by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's veteran state Capitol reporter Steve Walters is online at http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/jul05/343612.asp. The Madison Capital Times also has a budget story by statehouse reporter David Callender online at http://www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/index.php?ntid=48113&ntpid=0. Coverage that includes the reactions of Gov. Doyle's political rivals and others can be found on the Wispolitics.com Web site at http://www.wispolitics.com/index.iml?Article=41287.

Relaxing between music camp sessions

Hundreds of middle schoolers were at UW-Green Bay last week for the annual Middle School Band, Orchestra and Choral Camps. The youngsters no doubt worked hard, but they also found time to enjoy life on a university campus.
