New York Times to review Kaye's new book on Thomas PaineThe New York Times Book Review will carry a review Sunday (July 31) of Thomas Paine and the Promise of America, a new study of the political writer and his democratic legacy by Harvey Kaye, UW-Green Bay professor of Social Change and Development. The Times review is written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Joseph J. Ellis. Prof. Kaye's book about Paine, which journalist and political commentator Bill Moyers describes as "the best political book of the year," will be formally released in early August. It already is available at Barnes & Noble.
Tickets on sale Saturday for Weidner Center 2005-06 eventsThe Weidner Center for the Performing Arts has announced that tickets for 2005-06 events go on sale at 9 a.m. Saturday (July 30) at the Weidner Center Ticket Office. RCMS-Upward Bound holds fund-raising car washStudents in the Regional Center for Math and Science-Upward Bound Math and Science Program at UW-Green Bay will wash cars today to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House. The car wash will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Green Bay AutoZone East, 1761 Main St., and AutoZone West, 1168 W. Mason St.
UW-Sea Grant Institute to host conference on protecting Great LakesUW-Sea Grant Institute at UW-Green Bay will host the 4th Biennial Lake Michigan: State of the Lake Conference and the 5th Annual Great Lakes Beach Association Meeting at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay on Nov. 2-3. The conference brings together scientists, resource managers, planners, students and citizens working to improve and protect Lake Michigan and all Great Lakes beaches. The conference theme is Restoring Lake Michigan and Green Bay — Assessing What is Possible. A call for papers has been issued for a variety of topics. The abstract submittal deadline is Aug. 12. Board of Regents suspends granting back-up appointmentsUW System President Kevin Reilly and Board of Regents President David Walsh announced this week that the practice of granting back-up appointments for administrative employees within the UW System has been suspended. The leaders also directed UW institutions to provide information about back-up appointments for the regents' review. Budget leftovers: Reilly statement, winners and losersAs reported in the LOG Online earlier this week, Gov. Jim Doyle signed the 2005-07 state budget Monday (July 25). UW System Executive Senior Vice President Donald Mash offered his take on how the budget treats the System in a statement available online at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2005/r050725.htm.Newspaper coverage of the budget signing explored the budget's impact on the UW System and attempted to identify "winners and losers" in the five-months-plus budget battle. The analysis describes the budget as a "mixed bag" for the UW System. The Wisconsin State Journal in Madison quoted UW System President Kevin Reilly as saying the System was "hoping for better" from the state budget. BriefA paper by Vishal Lala, assistant professor of Business Administration (Marketing), has been accepted for presentation at the Direct Marketing Education Conference in Atlanta, Ga., on Oct. 15. The paper, titled "How Bad are Negative Blogs?", examines the implications of blogs containing negative information on well-known brands. The conference focuses on the areas of direct marketing and e-commerce.
