Chancellor Shepard to Regents: Budget cuts hit like hurricaneUW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard was one of two chancellors — UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Richard Wells being the other — to address the UW System Board of Regents today about the impact of budget reductions at the campus level. The chancellors compared the results of budget cuts to the impact of a series of hurricanes. "We use hurricanes because, at the campus level, that's what it feels like," Chancellor Shepard said. His prepared remarks to the Regents are archived at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/remarks/remarks1.htm.
Budget numbers are also on-lineChancellor Shepard illustrated the magnitude of the proposed budget cuts at UW-Green Bay in a handout at this morning's Regent meeting. The handout, which also describes how UW-Green Bay sets priorities and handles budgeting under more normal circumstances, is online at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/budget/regents.htm#.
Listen liveThe Board of Regents meeting was Webcast today and tomorrow morning's session (9 a.m.) will also be available. Sessions are also archived. See http://www.uwex.edu/ics/stream/regents/meetings/.
UW-Green Bay paper center 'ready to go on a tear'The Paper Technology Transfer Center opened its new downtown headquarters yesterday in fine fashion, with nearly 75 representatives of papermaking, political and public-education sectors represented. Those speaking or interviewed included Chancellor Bruce Shepard, U.S. Rep. Mark Green and center director David Hollenberg. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/biz_21709871.shtml".
Paper center makes statewide newsThat the new downtown center is big news in some circles is evident in the coverage afforded by one of the state's leading technology sites. Look for the headline "Paper Technology Center Opens in Green Bay" at http://wistechnology.com/.
Shepard, local leaders question budget processLocal education leaders Bruce Shepard of UW-Green Bay, Dan Nerad of the Green Bay Area Public Schools, and Jeff Rafn of NWTC met recently with the editorial board of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The rare joint interview was precipitated by what they see as an unusually nasty, partisan budget season and the fallout for education. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/news/archive/local_21701112.shtml.
What will the Governor veto?Gov. Jim Doyle is center stage now that the Legislature has at last presented him its revised version of the 2005-07 state spending plan. Which of those revisions will he veto? The latest speculation — that he will be relatively selective — is online at http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/jul05/339188.asp.
