Joint Finance adds $25 million to Governor's $65 million cut

As UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard described this morning in an all-campus e-mail to faculty and staff, the UW System will now have to absorb additional cuts courtesy of the latest version of the state's 2005-07 budget. For those who may have missed it, the Chancellor's short report is archived at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/remarks/email14.htm.

Reilly reacts

UW System President Kevin Reilly issued a statement on the Joint Finance action, at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2005/r050601.htm.

In-depth coverage

Mix biennial math, a $1 billion annual budget and a complex tangle of accounting factors, and it's difficult to sort out what precisely the latest version of the budget does for the UW System. Giving it the old college try were three downstate newspapers that devoted lengthy stories to the UW System budget. Take your pick:

Recap on the heirloom sale: First in line at 5:30 a.m.?

The sale of heirloom tomato and pepper plants sponsored by Natural and Applied Sciences on May 21 made more than $5,100 in profit to fund speakers and student travel, says coordinator Vicky Medland. Some highlights:

• The first person in line for the 8 a.m. greenhouse admission ticket distribution showed up at 5:30 a.m.

• More than 6,200 plants were sold.

• All of the 2,000 pepper plants were gone by 11 a.m.

• Brandywine, 4th of July, and a few other tomato varieties sold out, although some tomato plants were left at the end of the sale.

• Sale workers got "lots" of compliments on the organization of the sale.

Next year, look for more peppers, Brandywines

Medland says heirloom sale results will be instructive for next year: Look for more peppers — maybe 3,500 to 4,000 plants — and for more tomato plants of the varieties that sold out. She also notes that suggestions for tomato and pepper varieties for future sales are always welcome. Finally, says Medland, "We would like to especially thank all of our volunteers including students, faculty, staff and some of our community neighbors. Without them planting, transplanting and labeling all those little sticks it would have been impossible for us to have the sale."
