School's in for summer

Today (Monday, June 20) marks the start of four- and six-week sessions being offered during Summer 2005. Look for a statistical breakdown later this week, but with aggressive course scheduling and promotion, enrollments are running well ahead of last year, with headcount and revenue projections at or near their targets.

An invitation to a party in New York...

NYU Press and the American Foundation for the Blind send an invitation to the launch celebration for Prof. Kim Nielsen's newest book, "Helen Keller: Selected Writings" from 6 to 8 p.m. next Monday (June 27) at the American Foundation for the Blind, 11 Penn Plaza, Suite 300, New York. The publication date coincides with the 125th anniversary of Helen Keller's birth. Nielsen edited the collection of Keller's personal letters, political writings, speeches and excerpts of her published materials from 1887 to 1968. The book includes an introductory essay by Nielsen, head notes to each document, and a selected bibliography of work by and about Keller. Most of the letters and some of the images in the book are being published for the first time. Nielsen did the research at the Helen Keller Archives at the American Foundation for the Blind. Nielsen's biography of Keller, "The Radical Lives of Helen Keller," was published in 2004.

Reporters question salaries, workloads

It's state-budget season (the full Legislature begins work this week on the Joint Finance Committee's version) and the state's major newspaper is full of investigative reports on UW System spending. An administrator's paid leave is a hot media topic in Madison; see http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/jun05/334693.asp.

In Milwaukee, columnists Spivak and Bice unload on a heralded fine arts quartet. See http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/jun05/334802.asp.

On the plus side...

Kay Plantes, an MIT-trained economist and former Dreyfus administration official, says economic conditions warrant more support for the UW System. "We do not want to wake up and wonder what happened to the educational system that once made Wisconsin and its businesses so great," she writes in a guest column for the Journal-Sentinel at http://www.jsonline.com/bym/news/jun05/334962.asp.
