UW-Green Bay paper technology center is moving downtown

UW-Green Bay's Paper Technology Transfer Center is opening the doors to its new location downtown with a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. next Wednesday (July 6). The move to the Regency Center speaks to the program's growth potential and the University's commitment to community connections and the central city. See http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2005june.htm#paper.

Regan plays lead role in Wisconsin on AODA and sex assault issues

Marlene Regan, UW-Green Bay's alcohol and other drug coordinator and sexual assault response coordinator, has completed her first year in the role of "Wisconsin Regional Coordinator." Regional coordinators serve as liaisons between their state and the U.S. Department of Education and its Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention. For Wisconsin, Regan provides communication and technical assistance on topics such as alcohol, other drugs, violence prevention strategies and strategic planning through state and national meetings and at conferences and training sessions. A staff member in the Counseling and Health Center, she serves as UW-Green Bay's representative on the UW System Alcohol and Other Drug Committee and was chair of her UW-System peer group this year.

Jan Scoville is new director of Ecumenical Center

Katie Johnson the retired (or, as she says, "re-wired") director of the Ecumenical Center, shares the following:

"Please help us welcome the new Director of the Ecumenical Center, effective July 1st! Jan Scoville returns to higher education after a brief hiatus working with elementary and high school students. She just finished four years working as a school principal and is anxious to return to a college campus. She previously held positions at UW-Oshkosh, her alma mater, and UW-Whitewater. Jan has a master's degree in counseling with an emphasis in student development in higher education. In her spare time, Jan runs a successful auction business that involves both live auctions and EBAY auctions. She loves collecting antiques and decorating. She is married to Mike, who is a middle school Spanish teacher. They make their home in beautiful Door County. Feel free to stop by any time and introduce yourself."

Notes from camp

• The University's first-ever Space Experience Camp has 40 young people enrolled, doing all sorts of "very cool experiments" in the Lab Sciences Building. They'll hear from a real-live NASA astronaut, Mark Lee, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. this morning (Thursday, June 30) in the Rose Hall auditorium.

• Also, running this week is Vocal Jazz, Blues and Gospel Choir Camp. The free public concert in the University Theatre is at 6:30 p.m Friday (July 1).

• Also, the High School Summer Art Studio Camp, with about 100 young artists enrolled, will offer its public art exhibit on the first floor of Studio Arts, this Friday (July 1) from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.

Horizon League's 2005 all-sports title goes to Phoenix women

For the first time in school history, UW-Green Bay captured the Horizon League Women's All-Sports award, given to the school that is most competitive across all sports. The Phoenix captured three women's postseason titles — in basketball, swimming and diving and softball — and edged UW-Milwaukee. See http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/offthefield/060205a.asp.

Skier Hoelz repeats with academic all-America honors

Shane Hoelz, a senior on the Nordic ski team with a 3.92 GPA in human biology and chemistry, has received academic all-America honors. He is only the fourth UW-Green Bay student-athlete to be a two-time honoree. (The others were basketball player Tony Bennett, skier Angela Gaetz and volleyballer Leslie Kuhn.) See http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/offthefield/061405.asp.

That makes four this year

Shane Hoelz becomes the fourth Phoenix student-athlete to earn academic all-America honors during 2004-05. The others were Adam Ben-Zikri (men's soccer, 2nd team), Leslie Kuhn (volleyball, 2nd team) and Tiffany Mor (women's basketball, 2nd team).

And, finally, a conference honor for community service

The UW-Green Bay women's cross country team performed more than 600 hours of community service during the 2004-05 academic year to earn the Horizon League Community Outreach Award. The team, coached by Mike Kline, led the way for the Phoenix Athletics program and its renewed emphasis on community service. See http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/offthefield/052305.asp.

Still more investigative coverage

Every day brings more media coverage for the UW System, and the old saying "any publicity is good publicity" probably doesn't apply. Recent newspaper stories include:

• "Regent president says independent probe of Barrows considered," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel at http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/jun05/337323.asp

• "UW community has queries for all involved in Barrows case," Wisconsin State Journal at http://www.madison.com/wsj/mad/local/index.php?ntid=45220

• "Pol alleges cover-up by UW in Barrows case," Capital Times, at http://www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/index.php?ntid=45272

State budget in doubt: more UW cuts are possible

The Wisconsin Senate was scheduled to vote this week on the 2005-07 state budget but it appears the majority Republicans don't have the votes to pass the version favored by GOP leaders and the Joint Finance Committee. Speculation this morning: further cuts to the beleaguered UW System might be just the thing to break the logjam. See http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/jun05/337546.asp.
