$90 million cut, or $9 million increase? If you're confused by how newspapers and some legislators are referring to the same UW System budget as both cut and increase, it pays to have an interpreter. Saturday's edition of the Wisconsin State Journal provides a helpful translation with "UW System gets more, and it really is less," at http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/index.php?ntid=42292&ntpid=3.
Columns and editorials address UW System fundingSee:
"Finding more for UW is a must," Wisconsin State Journal, at
"UW System cuts will affect state's economy," Appleton Post-Crescent,
"Stop using UW System as piggy bank,' Wausau Daily Herald,
"Budget fight entertaining, but UW is getting hurt," Wisconsin State Journal,
"Feuds between UW, Legislature should end for good of the state," Technology Network,
"Shortsighted budgeting for higher education," St. Paul Pioneer Press,

Parent publication features Phuture PhoenixUW-Green Bay's award-winning Phuture Phoenix program continues to receive public attention. Parents of children attending Green Bay public schools recently received a newsletter with a nice write-up about the program. "Common Ground, Common Voices," a newsletter for parents from the Green Bay Education Association, carried a feature story with the headline "Phuture Phoenix Program raises Expectations." The story explains that the purpose of Phuture Phoenix is to excite and encourage students about future educational opportunities. It also details new plans for the two-year-old program, including parental involvement activities such as meetings to discuss financial aid options.
Late reports from the MarathonIn this space last week we applauded the efforts of several UW-Green Bay people who took part in the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon. An alert reader helpfully informed us that we might also have mentioned Bill Lepley, who ran the full marathon; Dick Anderson, who ran the half-marathon; and Sue Keihn, Kathy Pletcher and Lisa Tetzloff, who entered as walkers in the half-marathon division.
May 25 birthdays at the PSCAnother reader shares the news that Wednesday, May 25, happened to be a big day at the Phoenix Sports Center for new parents of future Phoenix. Welcome to Caleb Lawrence Brooks (8 lbs, 21 1/2 inches and future sports promotion person, no doubt) and also to Zachary David Johnson (7 lbs and 9 oz., 21 inches, and a sure-fire coaching prospect).
