Laatsch named new chairman at CarrollUW-Green Bay's longest-serving faculty member, Bill Laatsch, is assuming additional duties as the new chairman of the Board of Trustees at Carroll College in Waukesha. Maya Angelou appearance rescheduledThe Weidner Center has rescheduled Maya Angelou's appearance for Monday, July 25, at 7:30 p.m. The Bistro and showcase exhibits will open at 5:30 p.m. All tickets for the May 4 engagement, cancelled because of illness, will be honored. Tickets for the general public will go on sale starting on July 18 at 10 a.m.

UW schools land $1.3 million grant to lessen nursing shortageThe U.S. Department of Labor has awarded $1.3 million to UW schools to fund a program that will address the nation's nursing shortage by reducing the length of time it takes for nurses to be certified. The program, "The State of Wisconsin Initiative to Fast-Track (SWIFT) Nurse Educators," will help solve the problem by adding 70 more nurse educators with master's degrees by 2007, enabling 800 more students per year to be educated. Campus Compact's civic engagement guide available at LibraryThe first printed edition of the Community-Campus Civic Engagement Resource Guide is available for review in the Cofrin Library. The guide is a result of a survey by Wisconsin Campus Compact to document and share the civic work of member institutions and to provide practitioners in postsecondary institutions with some useful tools for creating meaningful and effective civic partnerships. Van fundraiser for Georgia Schroeder off to great startThe Pilgrim Lutheran School "Friends with a Plan for a Van" fundraiser raised $39,000 recently toward its $50,000 goal for the purchase of a van for Georgia Schroeder. Donations are still welcome. Checks may be made out to Pilgrim Lutheran Church and mailed to Schroeder Family Fund, c/o Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1731 St Agnes Dr., Green Bay, WI 54304. Schroeder, a UW-Extension employee who worked for UW-Green Bay in the late 1990s, was paralyzed in a February sled-hill accident.
