Joint Finance Committee takes up UW System budget Tuesday

The Legislature's Joint Finance Committee is scheduled to consider the University of Wisconsin System budget during a meeting at the State Capitol on Tuesday, May 24. The committee is working its way through state agency budgets and expects to forward its recommendations to the full Legislature by the end of the month.

Chancellor says additional cuts would have "serious impact" at UW-Green Bay

In an e-mail message today to the campus community, Chancellor Bruce Shepard said word out of the Capitol is that the UW System may face budget cuts beyond what Gov. Jim Doyle proposed in his 2005-07 budget plan. The following is the text of the Chancellor's message:

Colleagues:

As I have said on numerous occasions, I want to keep you as informed as possible about developments in the 2005-07 state budget process. Tomorrow, the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee will take up the UW System budget. This 16-member committee has been working on the governor's budget for months - holding public hearings and now voting on the budgets of specific state agencies. The committee is expected to send its recommendations to the Assembly and Senate by the end of the month.

We are hearing from our contacts at the state Capitol that the Joint Finance Committee is likely to recommend additional cuts in the UW System budget - cuts that go beyond those proposed by Gov. Doyle. Any additional cuts could have further serious impacts on the services UW-Green Bay and other campuses in the System deliver. We, our many local supporters, and others across the state are delivering that message to the committee as it prepares to vote on the UW budget.

UW-Green Bay today is issuing a news release that provides details on the impact of past and potential budget cuts on our campus and region. You can read the release later today on our Web site. Updated information will be posted on our budget Web site at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/budget/index.htm as the information becomes available to us.

We are also expecting that you will be able to follow, tomorrow, the Joint Finance Committee's discussion of and action on the UW Budget on the web: a LOG announcement will provide details.

I'd like to close by offering my usual cautionary note that when things look good they never turn out quite that well, and when things look bleak they never turn out quite that badly. Thanks again for all you do on behalf of Green Bay's University of Wisconsin.

Bruce

News release provides more detail about effects of potential cuts

As the Chancellor noted in his statement, the University is issuing a news release today with more detail about how UW-Green Bay has been impacted by a series of budget cuts. The cuts move in the opposite direction from what Northeastern Wisconsin needs at a time of economic transition, the Chancellor says in the release. The news release is available online at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2005may.htm#budget.
