UW-Green Bay trustee Crain is appointed to Regents

Gov. Jim Doyle announced today (Thursday, May 26) the appointment of Judith Crain — a current member of the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Council of Trustees — to the UW System Board of Regents. In announcing Crain's appointment to the 17-member citizen board, the Governor cited her work with UW-Green Bay as a positive factor. "Judy Crain has had a lifetime of experience in education," Doyle said, "from serving on the Green Bay Board of Education to the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Council of Trustees." Also appointed to the Regents was Michael J. Spector, the retired chairman of the Milwaukee law firm Quarles & Brady. For full details, visit Gov. Doyle's site at http://www.wisgov.state.wi.us/journal_media_detail.asp?prid=1142.

Shepard praises Crain appointment

Chancellor Bruce Shepard says the Board of Regents is gaining a tireless and effective advocate for public education in Judy Crain. He notes that Crain, a member of the Council of Trustees advisory and advocacy group since 2002, has been an enthusiastic participant in UW-Green Bay campus life, attending or taking part in numerous events, celebrations and educational programs. "Judy has been an active Trustee and very generous in spending long hours here, learning about this University and sharing her expertise with others, " said Shepard. "She sees education as the pathway to brighter futures for those traditionally not well served by education and, as importantly, as the means to build brighter futures for the entire community. She's now in a position to share that expertise, statewide, for the benefit of generations to come."

Crain calls 'access' a key issue

Judy Crain says two separate stints on the Green Bay School Board (including service as president from 1997 to 2002) and her time as a UW-Green Bay trustee have convinced her that access to strong public schools, both K-12 and higher education, "is absolutely vital to our society." Contacted today, Crain emphasized her concern that college opportunities remain available to low-income and traditionally under-served populations. "I know the UW System is under tremendous pressure, especially financial, and that answers are tough to come by," Crain said, "but I want to do my part to address those issues."

Crain to join Connolly-Keesler on Regents

With Legislative confirmation, Judy Crain will serve a seven-year term as a Regent, through 2012, and become the second member of the board with close UW-Green Bay ties. (Eileen Connolly-Kessler of Oshkosh is a 1982 graduate.) Recent history shows that previous appointments from the Green Bay area include former Regents Kathleen Hempel and the late Ruth Clusen.
