Long-time faculty member Anthony Galt dies

Anthony T. Galt, professor of Social Change and Development (Anthropology) died Saturday evening, Dec. 10, 2005. He had been a member of the UW-Green Bay faculty since 1971.

Prof. Galt's extensive record of research and publication was recognized in 1991 with the UW-Green Bay Founders Association Award for Excellence in Scholarship, which acknowledged the scope, quality and quantity of his research. He won grants to support his research from organizations including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Science Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. Much of Prof. Galt's research was carried out in Italy, particularly in southern Italy and on the island of Pantelleria during numerous stays in those locales. Two books, as well as many articles, book chapters and professional presentations reported on that research. He was co-author, with Larry J. Smith, of a textbook, "Models and the Study of Social Change."

Prof. Galt also had an extensive record in teaching and service to the institution. He served as chairperson of Social Change and Development, and chaired the Anthropology discipline for several terms. He received the Faculty Development Council's Featured Faculty Award for spring semester 1999.

A California native, Prof. Galt earned his bachelor's degree in anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, and completed advanced studies in anthropology through the Ph.D. at the University of California, Riverside.

Prof. Galt leaves his wife Janice and son Alex and his wife, Linda. They extend an invitation to a memorial service, followed by a reception, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18 at the Ecumenical Center.
