HR unveils new, user-friendlier Web site
It gets a fair amount of hits from both on- and off-campus users, and effective today, the Office of Human Resources and Affirmative Action has implemented a redesigned Web site at http://www.uwgb.edu/hr/. Please note that the Web site is designed so that any secure documents can be accessed with your campus login and password. In the event you find any links not working or cannot find information on the site, please contact Kris Soukup at ext. 2390 or soukupk@uwgb.edu of the Human Resources Office. For Web authors, if you have any links to the HR Web site, please remember to check your Web site to relink any links that may be affected by this change.
Galt memorial fund will support student travel
Contributions are now being accepted to support establishment of "The Anthony H. Galt Student Travel Fund." The newest UW-Green Bay fund honors the memory of Prof. Emeritus Galt, an award-winning scholar and advocate of international education, who passed away Dec. 10 at the age of 61. Donations can be made to the University Advancement Office with checks made out to the "Green Bay Fund" and designated for "The Anthony H. Galt Student Travel Fund."
Non-traditionals get voice on Regents
The Governor and Legislature have finalized the addition of a second student slot to the UW System Board of Regents. It will be reserved for a "non-traditional" student. System President Kevin Reilly likes the idea, and says so at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2005/r051221.htm.
At UW-Green Bay, Hoppe Scholarship goes to Jennifer Wilson
Jennifer Wilson of Green Bay, a student in UW-Green Bay's Adult Degree Program, has been awarded the program's Patricia L. Hoppe Scholarship and will receive $750 for the spring semester. The scholarship honors the memory of Patricia L. Hoppe, a former student in the program who died of cancer before she could complete her degree, but expressed a desire to help nontraditional students achieve their educational and career goals. See http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2005dec.htm#scholarship.
Speaking of the Adult Degree Program... they will, on these dates
The Adult Degree Program is a path to a bachelor's degree program for nontraditional students. Students attend half-day Saturday classes once a month and work independently between classes. Some classes are offered online, or through audio and videotape. Know of any prospective students? Upcoming info sessions are:
• Jan. 19, Thursday, 6 p.m.
• Jan. 21, Saturday, 9:30 a.m.
• Feb. 16, Thursday, 6 p.m.
• Feb. 18, Saturday, 9:30 a.m.
• March 23, Thursday, 6 p.m.
• March 25, Saturday, 9:30 a.m.
• April 20, Thursday, 6 p.m.
• April 22, Saturday, 9:30 a.m.
Eau Claire chancellor vetoes idea of student fees for professor pay
Update on a story some have been following: UW-Eau Claire students won't pay another $20 a year to boost the salaries of their instructors. Interim Chancellor Vicki Lord Larson said this week she would not forward a Student Senate resolution requesting student-financed pay raises to the Board of Regents. Although many lauded the proposal as a meaningful gesture, Larson and others said compensation must remain the responsibility of Regents and elected officials.
Plan ahead: Coffeehouse is open over January
Grab a cup of coffee or a gourmet sandwich, over winter break, at the Common Grounds Coffeehouse! It's open:
• Tuesday, Jan. 3 to Friday, Jan. 6, 7:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
• Monday, Jan. 9 to Friday Jan. 13: 7:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Common Grounds is located in the University Union on the second floor.
Police, security understaffed at campuses, UW report says
A UW System audit report offers the opinion that budget cuts to UW campus police departments are having an impact on safety and crime-prevention efforts. UW-Green Bay's Randy Christopherson is among those quoted at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051222/GPG0101/512220410/1207/GPGnews.
Wonder what bald people think about this kind of thing? Didn't think so
'UW-L professor shaves head to drive food campaign' is the headline over a recent La Crosse Tribune story about a Prof. Oyster who challenged students and co-workers. Fun or just silly, it generated big buzz. Click http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2005/12/22/news/02cut.txt.
'Bill would allow faculty, staff unions at UW campuses'
The Oshkosh Northwestern includes coverage of a proposal that would allow UW System faculty and academic staff to unionize, a move some say would make for more rapid conflict resolution. See http://thenorthwestern.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051222/OSH0101/512220358/1128/OSHnews.
Michigan State game an event for Phoenix Athletics
At No. 10 in the country and with a roster featuring several NBA prospects, the Michigan State Spartans put on a show in defeating the UW-Green Bay men 98-69 at the Resch Center Wednesday night. The crowd of 9,108 — second-highest ever despite the mid-week, Christmas-time spot on the schedule — saw a rising young Phoenix team stay close before MSU found a higher gear. For game coverage, see http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/mbb/122105a.asp.
Tickets available for Oneida Casino Holiday Classic
The Phoenix men are back in action next Thursday and Friday (Dec. 29 and Dec. 30) hosting the annual holiday tournament at the Resch Center. Northern Michigan is the opponent at 7:30 p.m. the first night, while a solid D-1 program in Cal-Irvine provides the opposition on Friday, also at 7:30. For more, click http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/mbb/index.asp.
Bonus for Phoenix fans: Anteaters vs. Boll Weevils
The opening game of the 2005 Oneida Casino Holiday Classic, at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, comes with the price of admission. The dream nickname matchup has the UC-Irvine Anteaters vs. the Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils as a warmup to Phoenix-Wildcats. (Apparently the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs weren't available.)
Women's soccer standout Oligney scores national academic honors
Sarah Oligney, a senior midfielder on the UW-Green Bay women's soccer team, was recently named an all-Great Lakes performer for her play during 2005. Her biggest honors, though, involve academic distinction. Oligney was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America second team, becoming the first All-American, athletic or academic, in team history. See http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/offthefield/122005.asp.
Former Phoenix star Scharlow gets pro shot
Abby Scharlow, who helped the Phoenix to three NCAA tournament appearances from 2003-05, was a second-round choice (7th overall) by the San Diego Siege in the National Women's Basketball League's draft on Dec. 20. The NWBL is a four-team spring league based primarily in California. Each team can feature up to three WNBA players preparing for their summer season. Scharlow was among 96 players evaluated at the recent WNBL tryout camp. Click http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/wbb/122205.asp.
Regent member accepts post with PEARLS for Teen Girls, Inc.
Danae Davis, director of diversity affairs for Miller Brewing, is leaving her position in early January to become executive director of PEARLS for Teen Girls, Inc., a girl empowerment and leadership non-profit organization in Milwaukee. Davis is a UW System Regent.
Santa wishes involve Weidner Center, Bayfest, local music scene
A Green Bay Press-Gazette entertainment columnist drops plenty of names — national, campus and community — in offering her 2006 wish list and commenting on the local scene. Click http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051222/GPG07/512220342/1266/GPGent.
