P-G says UW-Green Bay, growth agenda
key to strong regional economy
High praise and important local support for Chancellor Bruce Shepard's convocation message to faculty, staff and community comes from the editorial page of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The paper notes that Shepard, while acknowledging the frustration and emotion connected with recent state budget cuts, "to his credit" is focusing on the future and UW-Green Bay's essential role in transitioning to a new economy. Successful regions have strong public universities at their core, the editorial agreed. It urged, in turn, "strong support from the Northeastern Wisconsin community to convince state legislators that the state's future demands that they stop using the UW System as a pawn in their politically driven budget fights." On-line at the University website at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/thenews.htm#key.
Snapshots from freshman move-in day
Beautiful weather, friendly staff/student/faculty helpers, first-class accommodations... new freshmen arriving for orientation week at UW-Green Bay couldn't have asked for a better move-in day. See images on the photoblog at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/photoblog/movein05.htm
Gray: Day is part of 'something special'
Glenn Gray, director of residence life, says the University receives favorable feedback about orientation activities and the volunteer help available to freshmen and their families on move-in day. "The families that are moving their sons and daughters in are ecstatic about all the University support in helping them move in and transition to college life. I think we've got something special going on here that students and their families really appreciate."
Entwistle promotes NYC theatre Spring Break for faculty, staff
Up to 10 slots for faculty and staff are available on the Spring Break 2006 UWGB Meets NYC Theatre Trip. Prof. Jeff Entwistle wants to hear from you. "I hope some of my colleagues are able to join us, as this is the most fun I have had in 25 years of teaching and I want others in the UWGB Community to have that same kind of enjoyment... this is an unbelievably great experience in one of the greatest cities in the world." Included on the itinerary are the Broadway shows Wicked, The Color Purple, Woman in White and Doubt, two Off-Broadway shows and many other activities. Cost is $1,600 or $1,350 per person (you decide) with most costs included. Stay tuned for more details or visit the Web now at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/staffNYC.htm
Look for flashy start to employee drive
Shane Kohl in Advancement is promising a flashy opening to the 2005 Employee Drive, unlike anything (well, most anything) you've seen before. Watch your inboxes next week.
The new phone books are here!
The new 2005-06 campus phone directories have been delivered. They are available for pick-up in the Marketing/Communications Office, but please remember that the phone books are distributed only to offices and units, and not singly, to individuals. (It is done that way to better account for the limited supply.) To receive your allotment, have your designated phone-books-picker-upper report to CL 815, any weekday, between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Suspension of Standard Mail and Periodicals Mail acceptance to Katrina zone
This from Jose Zayas: Effective immediately, the Postal Service is not accepting any Standard Mail or Periodicals Mail - from any source - addressed for delivery within the following three-digit ZIP Code ranges: 369, 393, 394, 395, 396, 700 and 701.This emergency action has been taken as a result of severe facility damage, evacuations and other issues resulting from Hurricane Katrina. They are formulating plans to address the handling of standard mail and periodicals already in the mailstream. Look for updates as circumstances warrant.
Campus Compact offers ideas for U's planning Katrina relief
UW-Green Bay is a member of Wisconsin Campus Compact, a consortium of schools concerned with promoting service-learning opportunities. In response to inquiries about how colleges and universities can help with disaster relief efforts and to provide information about how students can get involved, Campus Compact is developing a Web clearinghouse at http://www.compact.org/resource/hurricane.html
Unofficially, hurricane efforts are already under way here
The urgency of the Gulf Coast situation was mentioned at Thursday's FOCUS session for incoming students and parents. Also, the UW-Green Bay Alumni Association is exploring whether avenues exist to contact alumni in the devastated area to offer assistance. Expect more developments in coming days across campus. In the meantime, a commonly recommended general starting point is the American Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org/
Kersten inerview on labor movement in Monday's Journal Sentinel
Watch for a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel interview with Andrew Kersten, UW-Green Bay associate professor of Social Change and Development, in the newspaper's Labor Day edition. Reporter Joel Dresang interviewed Kersten about the labor movement in general and the recent split within the AFL-CIO. The online version of the Journal Sentinel is at http://www.jsonline.com.
Barrows matter moves forward
Earlier this week, UW-Madison posted on its news site an announcement concerning the investigation of policies and allegations in the case of former vice chancellor Paul Barrows. Those interested in the case can get an update at http://www.news.wisc.edu/11472.html
How about an enemy pretzel with potential presidential threat level DEFCON 1?
Rules are important, contracts must be honored, improperly served food can be deadly, and food is no doubt a multi-million-dollar concern here. But when you start writing rules - important rules, we agree - some of the results might strike some as unintentionally humorous. What is a Food Event, anyway? And check out the "Food Flow Chart" on page 11 and the instructions for "Non-Potentially Hazardous Snacks." (Do they mean donuts, or like, GWB and the pretzel?) Seriously, though, everyone should enjoy, and benefit from, reading the important Food Event Policy at http://www.uwgb.edu/policies/foodevent.pdf
Brief
