Clarification on media reports involving mumps in Wisconsin
The Health Service Office offers a campus update today (Friday, April 21) in light of the heavy media coverage concerning mumps. A UW-Green Bay student who resides off campus has been tested to rule out mumps, and she has been advised of the need to be isolated, as a precaution. Brown County Public Health has been contacted and they advise that no further campus intervention is needed at this time.

Reminders on risk reduction
Things you can do to decrease your risk of becoming infected with mumps are:

• Check your immunization status
• Avoid crowds
• Wash your hands often
• Avoid rubbing your eyes and touching your nose and mouth
• Use disposable tissues
• Do not share eating utensils or beverages
• Avoid contact with the saliva of others
• Drink at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water each day
• Eat a well balanced diet including fruits and vegetables
• Get adequate rest: 6-8 hours/night.

Vaccinations?
A high percentage of students and employees on campus will have had proper mumps vaccinations as part of their medical histories. Those who are concerned should check their immunization records. The Counseling and Health Center will provide MMR vaccine to students free of charge. The MMR vaccine will also be available for faculty and staff born after 1957 for $5.00. Those born before 1957 should contact their health care provider. For more information refer to: http://www.dhfs.wisconsin.gov/communicable/communicable/factsheets/Mumps.htm.
